September 9, 2020: Cameo Appearance

As I've mentioned, I'm on the company's "party committee", charged with arranging the main summer and holiday work events. The former was cancelled, and now we're trying to figure out how to manage the latter. A couple weeks ago, we decided to take our venue's offer skip this year and transfer our deposit to 2021, but we still need to do something.

Now, we're trying to figure out something Zoomish. We still have this years budget though, and a brilliant idea of mine was to procure 3-4 personalized videos from Cameo to be interspersed throughout whatever we do. This whole long winded story is leading to this point: the very idea of Cameo is weird and insane and a little sad and depressing, and browsing the available options is very peculiar.

      1. Ayyup.

I was downtown Sac at my office yesterday. AQI peaked at well over 400 (big on larger particulates like these) and the air in my building was bad enough that I was wearing my mask at my desk for much of the afternoon.

The air had seemed to have cleared by evening and my wife opened windows at around 2:00 a.m. when she got up to pee. This is what I woke up to.

Things didn't smell very smokey or dirty (contra other days) initially. But this blanket was everywhere.

    1. Yikes. I hope you’re not feeling any internal effects.

When I lived on Pendleton, we had a wildfire get close enough that ash was raining all over the area. Watching the fire come over the ridge line was a sight I won’t soon forget.

      1. came home with a headache and fatigue yesterday, but other than that, nothing much. I feel for folks with compromised respiratory systems, however.

  1. Well... my front of house salaried manager tested positive yesterday. Looks like an 80 hour work week for this guy. And... a day full of interviewing staff to assess potential spread. Fun!

      1. Very low odds of transmission through food. So, that's good.

But FRONT of house manager.... 😬

      2. MDH tells me we only have to worry about the shift he worked on Monday. Anyone who had a 15 minute continuous exposure if he was not wearing a mask. He is really good about wearing his mask anywhere in the building. He doesn't think he had any such encounter, but I will still interview the employees who worked that day. I am pretty confident he only had brief encounters with guests as we were pretty busy that day and he was stuck expoing in the kitchen most of his shift. I lose him until next Wednesday. The good news is he already had the weekend off. So for me it just means working 9 am to 1130 pm today and tomorrow and a 9 to 9 shift on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In better news my golf partner and I won our end of season playoffs last night and won some money and bragging rights. It was a chilly round of golf.

        1. So... got a call from MDH this afternoon and my manager was informed incorrectly by his health care provider. He was potentially contagious as far back as Friday, so I am about 90% done interviewing the 50 people who worked with him on 3 different shifts. Oh, and it is no longer 15 minutes of continuous exposure, but 15 minutes of cumulative exposure now. I am a bit surprised that none of my staff are totally freaked out by this. I think up in my neck of the woods we all know someone who has had it. I am anticipating losing 2 more key employees for the next 10-12 days for self quarantine. It will suck but we will definitely take every precaution to do our part to slow the spread.

This was not what I imagined when I decided to open my own joint, but I guess if I was working for someone else, I would be dealing with the same issues. I did have a key hourly employee volunteer to take a few hour off my plate so I am now under 80 hours for the week. 🙂

      1. Ok, so....

Will Hollywoke be impressed by the number of prominent roles filled by persons of color, or pissed about the "white savior" aspect that it now creates?

(race/ethnicity is more than a little unclear from the novels, other than allusions to Islam, lots of Middle Eastern/desert motifs, and, eventually, an explicit inclusion of Jews)

  2. A friend of mine received an autographed baseball from a friend of hers. I could not identify the autograph. Maybe you can? (I suspect it is a player from the 2000s, but I'm not really sure. They also had 1991 World Series cereal boxes, so…)

  3. Hey, gang. Due to a series of half-bakef communications, I removed a dormant player from the WGOM fantasy football league to add someone...who was already there.

If you'd like to be included, message me ASAP as I need to create an even number of teams in the next four hours or so. FB Messenger or Google Hangouts preferred

  4. A bunch of friends got Dylan Playfair - Letterkenny's Reilly- to record a cameo for our hockey-loving friends when their baby was born . Turned out better than I could ever have hoped.

    1. This was shared amongst a bunch of higher-ed folks a few weeks ago. That's my favorite use of Cameo so far.

    2. We did Greg Oden once. Pretty fun. The most fun is when they decline due to the script.
