MAZATLAN, GAME 45

LOS MOCHIS 7, MAZATLAN 5 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Ramon Rios was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Isaac Paredes was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Maxwell Leon was 2-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Juan Ramon Noriega pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two walks.  Alejandro Soto struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Francisco Cordoba was 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, and two RBIs.  Rodolfo Amador was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Amilcar Gomez was 2-for-5.  Esteban Quiroz was 1-for-2 with a home run (his seventh), three walks, and two runs.

The game:  Carlos Munoz' two-run single in the first gave Mazatlan an early lead, but Los Mochis tied it in the second and went into the lead to stay in the fourth.  It was only 4-3 through seven, but Derick Hall's two-run single highlighted a three-run eighth that put the game out of reach.  Mazatlan got two in the ninth, but a baserunning error ended the game.

WP:  Santiago Gutierrez (2-4).  LP:  Edgar Torres (2-5).  S:  None.

Stats:  Paredes is batting .353.  Munoz is batting .304.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 0-for-1 and is batting .300.

Record:  Mazatlan is 22-23, in seventh place in the Mexican Pacific League, six games behind Obregon.  They are a half game behind sixth-place Mexicali.

Next game:  Mazatlan again hosts Los Mochis tonight.

GIGANTES, GAME 21

GIGANTES 7, ESCOGIDO 2 AT GIGANTES

Batting stars:  Moises Sierra was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Juan Francisco was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Scott Harkin pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk and striking out three.  Matt Dermody retired all five men he faced, striking out three.

Opposition stars:  Estevan Florial was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Tai Tiedemann pitched 2 shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

The game:  The Gigantes scored single runs in the first, third, and fourth, then put the game out of reach with four in the seventh.  Escogido got both of their runs in the eighth.

WP:  Harkin (1-1).  LP:  Casey Harman (0-2).  S:  None.

Stats:  Alfredo Marte was 0-for-3 and is batting .364.  Ronald Guzman was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.  Dermody and Jesus Reyes each has an ERA of zero.  Raynel Espinal pitched a scoreless inning and has an ERA of 1.17.

Record:  The Gigantes are 10-11, in fifth place in the Dominican League, 2.5 games behind Este.  They are one game behind fourth-place Escogido.

Next game:  The Gigantes will play a doubleheader at Este on Friday.

Their game was rained out.  They will host Magallanes tonight.

MAYAGUEZ, GAME 8

MAYAGUEZ 4, CAGUAS 3 AT MAYAGUEZ

Batting stars:  Henry Ramos was 3-for-3 with a walk.  Ex-Twin Danny Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Luis Medina struck out nine in four shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Robby Rowland pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one walk and striking out one.  Jacob Condra-Bogan and Nicholas Padilla each pitched a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Rey Fuentes was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs.  Miguel Amaya was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

The game:  Mayaguez scored three in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.  T. J. Rivera's two-run single broke the tie.  Caguas scored two in the seventh but did not get the tying run past first base.

Stats:  Ramos is batting .483.  Ortiz is batting .344.  Emmanuel Rivera and T. J. Rivera are each batting .313.  Medina, Rowland, Condra-Bogan, and Padilla each has an ERA of zero.  Holden Capps gave up a run in two-thirds of an inning and has an ERA of 2.45.

Record:  Mayaguez is 7-1, tied for first in the Puerto Rican League with Caguas.
