February 10, 2021: Cabin Fever

While we're coming up on a full fun filled year of pandemic, it started in earnest at the tail end of winter. The outdoors were always an option, but not when the highs are in the single digits. Definitely hard to squeeze excess energy out of the younguns.

  1. The peperoncino will sometimes run around in circles while I read to him, which as far as I'm concerned is a fine outlet for excess energy. He's fortunately also getting a lot of active play with his pod.

The jalapeno is the one who has always needed a lot of physical activity, but he just wants to sit and play video games or watch YouTube all day. He at least has basketball a few times a week. I really miss the days of open gym time on weekends!

  3. Covid+ numbers in Dakota County have fallen to levels not seen since about June. Hopefully, the worst is behind us.

  4. According to accuweather, we're going to go below zero tonight and not get back above zero until Monday.

    1. We're going to get below freezing this weekend and might see temps in the teens. I don't recall ever seeing temps that low when we lived in SoCal. So far, winter in San Antonio has been very comparable to SoCal, but it sounds like they usually get more rain.

Why do [grizzlies] come to [Vancouver Island] only to leave again? What are they moving away from, or to? Could these bears be part of a larger, global pattern of expanding grizzly populations? These questions lead to an ice age mystery and a glimpse of a possible future.

  6. I send Marty out the back door one more time before my Zoom meeting starts so he hopefully won't bark all through the call, and it seems like longer than usual before he asks back in. So, I look out the door and don't see him, I figure he must be off farting around somewhere, then I notice the fur on the patio. I'm thinking that's odd and then it hits me. I head outside and sure enough he has killed another wabbit. I get him back in the house and get out the dog wipes and clean all the blood off his paws. Meanwhile, the Notorious DLP has snuck out while I let Marty in and has dragged the wabbit carcass onto the patio. I finally get everybody back in the house and cleaned up in time to sign on for my meeting. That makes the current score Marty 4, fluffy bunnies 0.

  7. I'm seeing chatter in the media asking about whether the Wild should retire Mikko Koivu's number now that he retired.

My initial thought it absolutely not, he was a good player for quite a while on some good-at-best teams that never made much noise in the playoffs. Maybe it's time to create a ring of honor or some other lower-level honor, I can see that level of honor for him making sense.

    1. I love Mikko. One of my favorites, and he's probably the best candidate for a retired number that the Wild have got, but I agree - that would seem like a reach.

      1. I am torn on this subject. Yes, he never put up a ton of points but he was considered one of the top defensive centers for his entire career.

This link delves a bit into the analytics side of Koivu's defensive prowness.

To me, he has been kind of the Joe Mauer of the Wild. Vastly undervalued by the common fan, yet a darling for those who really know the game.

Like DG up above says, definitely the best candidate for a retired number for the Wild. Personally, I would be fine with it, but wait a few years.
