March 28, 2021: Oh So Quiet

The rest of the family is on their way to a rented house up north for spring break. I will be joining them on Wednesday, but in the meantime, I get to be in a very quiet house.

  1. I know its spring training and I should not put too much stock in things, but is anyone worried about the Twins offense? 12 of their 24 games played have resulted in 2 runs or less.

    1. I'm already on record as saying the Twins will have a down year this year. Obviously, spring training does nothing to prove me right--come Thursday morning, all the numbers will be zero. But spring training has given me no reasons to change my mind, either.

  2. I turned on the UND-UMD game in the second period last night. With about 5 minutes left in the third period and UMD leading 2-0, I said to Mrs. Twayn that this game was far from over, that UND is dangerous and aggressive and can score goals fast. With just over 3 minutes of regulation play remaining UND pulled their goalie and scored twice within a couple of minutes to tie the game. Then we watched 4 full periods of scoreless overtime before UMD netted the game-winner a couple of minutes into the 5th extra period. It turned out to be the longest playoff hockey game in NCAA history and one of the best I've ever watched.

    1. I also watched the SCSU-Boston University game yesterday. The Huskies looked good, almost dominant, in their win. But at 4:30 they play #2 ranked Boston College, who advanced with a no-contest because Notre Dame got the COVID, so they'll have fresh legs under them. My heart is with the Huskies, but my money would have to be on the Eagles.

      1. Three of the Frozen Four are Minnesota schools. None of which is coached by Spamtown's Finest, Bob Motzko. Bummer for him and the Gophers.

        1. I was a big Motzko fan when he coached my team. I totally get why he made the move an hour southeast, but I have to be honest and say I was rooting for the purple and gold in that game. Good for Mankato. I do wish BSU would have made it 4 Minnesota teams, as one of my son's former teammates is on that team. Also, on a weird note, my son worked at Mariucci his freshman year at the U of M and one of his duties was to clean Motzko's office every weekend. He would take a picture of his office nameplate just to razz me... every weekend.

On the women's side of things, my daughter made several Minnesota High School State Tournament appearances with a girl who is a freshman on the NCAA Championship team that is based in Madison, WI.

Our local high school girls bumped up to AA , from Class A, 2 years ago and made their first appearance in the AA State Tournament. They lost on Saturday in 2OT to Minnetonka. Our goalie is a the youngest daughter of some very good friends, and it was the first game all year she gave up more than one goal. She saved 57 out of 59 shots. That team now has the second most state tournament appearances in the history of MN Girls HS hockey. They are one appearance behind S. St. Paul. Fun to be part of that program's history.

      2. I have a good friend who lives in my town who is from Boston. Being a big SCSU fan, I just may have had money on the Huskies, and I might just be relishing in the fact that both Boston teams lost to my team. Now he is claiming UMass as his team as well. I will wait to see Brodzinski's status before making a gentleman's bet.

  3. My Adams post is in the can. My thinking about these is that I figured that I wouldn't be able to create posts as long as Washington's 4900 words. This one weighs in at 6100 words unless I edit it down some. Lots to say about Adams and the Presidential Podcast post on Adams was... really something.

  4. Yesterday, I saw my parents for the first time in nine months after having seen them pretty much every month for ten years. There's been... decline. Dad's cancer has spread and he's undergone Chemotherapy and his energy level is pretty low. He has a very tough time breathing and as a result, he can't exert himself much. The doctors aren't sure why that is. He is getting good oxygen into his blood stream and other than a small spot of emphysema, his lungs are pretty clear. His spirits were good, but for someone as tough as he's been, there's no denying that he's no longer that guy. Mom is slower, she had a tough time negotiating the two steps up to my front door and complained of her arthritis.

Nevertheless, it was good to see them. In some ways, they haven't changed. They are still the same personalities, with the same interests, and had the same level of enthusiasm that they have always had. They are still mom and dad, despite the ravages of time.

    1. Very glad you were able to get together. May you see them much more often in the times to come.

    2. despite the ravages of time

Oh, indeed. Funny that in my teens I couldn't wait for my 20s, and in my 30s I couldn't waif for my .... Nope. I'm still excited to find out who I'll be at X age, but the olds (and I know I'm a fair bit younger than some of you old farts) are not really fun. I always heard people say that things went to shit when they turned 40 and I laughed that off as just a thing people said, but now I get it. Oh, boy, do I get it.

Anyway, I'm glad you've been able to hang with the folks. I'm looking forward to doing the same in June in Minnesota. Speaking of, I might swing by the zooms joint for a lunch sometime around June 17th / 18th just for shits and giggles.

  5. I've asked a few times, but it seems like the keeper league has maybe met its demise?

Anyone interested in a regular old fantasy baseball league? A new keeper league? What's our thoughts?

    1. Can’t recall the last time I saw rpz around here. I’m fantasy baseball homeless as well if this league doesn’t pick up.
