It was looking good for the Saints before it rained.  Mark Contreras comes a homer short of the cycle.  Rain wins in Cedar Rapids.  Mussels batters have been less than Mighty.

ST. PAUL AT OMAHA

The game was suspended in the fifth inning with the Saints leading 8-1.  It will be completed today, followed by the regularly scheduled game.

WICHITA 9, SPRINGFIELD 3 IN SPRINGFIELD

The Wind Surge scored two in the second and never trailed.  A three-run seventh put the game out of reach.

Batting stars:  Mark Contreras was 3-for-6 with a triple, a double, two runs, and two RBIs.  Jose Miranda was 3-for-6 with two RBIs.  Gilberto Celestino was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBIs.  Aaron Whitefield was 2-for-5 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Hector Lujan struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.  Zach Neff struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Nick Dunn was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk.  Nolan Gorman was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Jacob Bosiokovic pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out one.

Starter:  Dakota Chalmers struck out five in four innings, but allowed three runs on four hits and four walks.

Stats:  Whitefield is batting .455.  Caleb Hamilton was 0-for-3 and is batting .455.  Miranda is batting .391.  Damek Tomscha was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.  Ernie De La Trinidad was 1-for-4 and is batting .333.  Lujan has an ERA of zero.  Neff has an ERA of 2.08.

David Banuelos was 1-for-5 and is batting .077.  Calvin Faucher retired the only man he faced and has an ERA of 67.50.

Standings:  The Wind Surge is 4-1, in first place, one game ahead of Northwest Arkansas.

Rained out.  There will be a doubleheader today.

BRADENTON 7, FORT MYERS 2 IN BRADENTON

The Marauders scored in the first inning and led all the way.  It was 5-0 before the Mighty Mussels scored two in the seventh.

Batting stars:  Keoni Cavaco was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Kyle Schmidt was 2-for-5.  Willie Joe Garry, Jr. was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer, his second.

Pitching star:  Juan Pichardo pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two walks and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Jasiah Dixon was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Endy Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.  Jose Maldonado struck out six in three innings, giving up one hit.

Starter:  Steven Cruz struck out five in 1.2 innings, but allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks.

Stats:  Edouard Julien was 0-for-3 and is batting .357.  Cavaco is batting .350.  Anthony Escobar allowed two unearned runs in two innings, leaving him with an ERA of zero.

It's early, obviously, but the Mighty Mussels started six players with batting averages below .200.  Wander Valdez and Daniel Ozoria are at zero.  Aaron Sabato is at .056.  Leobaldo Cabrera is batting .100.  Max Smith is at .118.  Garry is at .167.

Record:  The Mighty Mussels are 3-2, in second place, 1.5 games behind Tampa.
