Minor Details: Games of May 9

Saints players play out of position, not always out of necessity.  Aaron Whitefield homers to lead the Wind Surge.  Excellent pitching gives the Kernels a doubleheader sweep.  The Mighty Mussels get blown out despite scoring nine runs.

ST. PAUL 8, OMAHA 2 IN OMAHA (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Leading 2-1, the Saints scored six in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Batting stars:  Roberto Pena was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and three RBIs.  Ryan Jeffers was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Bailey Ober struck out three in three innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.  Chandler Shepherd pitched a perfect inning.  Shaun Anderson struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Luke Farrell struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Emmanuel Rivera was 2-for-4.  Kyle Isbel was 2-for-5.  Grant Gavin pitched three shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk and striking out two.

Stats:  Pena is batting .667.  Keon Broxton was 1-for-4 and is batting .333.  Jeffers is batting .300.  Rob Refsnyder was 1-for-4 and is batting .300.  Shepherd has an ERA of zero.  Anderson has an ERA of zero.  Andrew Vasquez struck out the only man he faced and has an ERA of zero.

Jimmy Kerrigan was 0-for-3 and is batting zero.  Brent Rooker was 0-for-2 and is batting .176.  Robinson Leyer gave up a run in two-thirds of an inning and has an ERA of 11.57.

Record:  The Saints are 2-3.

OMAHA 6, ST. PAUL 1 IN OMAHA (SCHEDULED GAME--7 INNINGS)

The Saints scored in the top of the first, but it was all Storm Chasers after that.  They scored two in the first to take the lead and never looked back.

Batting star:  Brent Rooker was 2-for-3.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Kelvin Gutierrez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.  Kyle Isbel was 3-for-4 with two runs.  Jackson Kowar struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on six hits and two walks.

Starter:  I assume Ian Gibaut was an opener.  He pitched one inning, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk and striking out one.  Andrew Albers followed and pitched four innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and a walk and striking out two.

Stats:  Roberto Pena was 1-for-3 and is batting .500.  Albers was 1-for-2 and is batting .500.

Joe Kerrigan was 0-for-2 and is batting zero.  Drew Maggi was 0-for-1 and is batting .188.  Gibaut has an ERA of 7.71.  Danny Coulombe gave up two runs in an inning and has an ERA of 7.71.  Albers has an ERA of 10.13.

Maggi, who started at third base, left the game in the first inning, presumably due to injury.  Lots of position changes followed.  Tomas Telis, a catcher who started the game at second base, went to third.  Keon Broxton, who started in left, moved to second.  Rooker, who started at first base, moved to left.  Ryan Jeffers, who started at DH, moved to first.  I don't understand why the Saints were so shorthanded in the infield.  I also don't understand why, with two non-infielders playing the infield, Rob Refsnyder, who has been an infielder most of his career, was left in right field.

Record:  The Saints are 2-4, in sixth place, 2.5 games behind Columbus.
