Minor Details: Games of June 3

A tough day for Jhoan Duran.  Jermaine Palacios drives home a game-winner.  Tyler Palm continues to struggle.  Louie Varland has an excellent game.

LOUISVILLE 6, ST. PAUL 3 IN LOUISVILLE

The Bats scored three in the third and led the rest of the way.

Batting star:  Tomas Telis was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his third.  The Saints had just two hits.

Pitching stars:  Andrew Vasquez struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Tom Hackimer struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Dwight Smith, Jr. was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs.  Alejo Lopez was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, and two runs.  T. J. Friedl was 1-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk.

Starter:  Jhoan Duran pitched four innings, giving up three runs on three hits and five walks and striking out two.

Good stats:  None.

Bad stats:  David Banuelos was 0-for-3 in his AAA debut and is batting zero.  Daniel Descalso was 0-for-4 and is batting .064.  Sherman Johnson was 0-for-4 and is batting .125.  Keon Broxton was 0-for-2 and is batting .162.  Robinson Leyer allowed three runs in 1.1 innings and has an ERA of 5.84.  Hackimer lowered his ERA to 12.46.

Record:  The Saints are 13-13, in second place in the AAA East-Midwest, five games behind Omaha.

The Saints were scheduled to play a doubleheader to make up for Tuesday's rainout, but a lengthy rain dealy before play started changed that plan.

WICHITA 7, ARKANSAS 6 IN WICHITA

Trailing 6-5, the Wind Surge scored two in the ninth to win it.  A sacrifice fly tied the game and Jermaine Palacios' RBI single brought home the deciding run.

Batting stars:  Andrew Bechtold was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Aaron Whitefield was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base, his eighth.

Pitching stars:  Josh Winder pitched 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk and striking out four.  Jovani Moran retired all four men he faced, striking out two.

Opposition stars:  Brian O'Keefe was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fifth.  Connor Lien was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.  Steven Moyers struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Good stats:  B. J. Boyd was 0-for-3 and is batting .471.  Whitefield raised his average to .316.  Palacios was 1-for-4 and is batting .314.  Jose Miranda was 1-for-3 and is batting .311.  Moran has an ERA of 1.00.  Winder has an ERA of 2.05.

Bad stats:  Peter Mooney was 1-for-3 and is batting .197.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 16-11, tied for first with Tulsa in the AA Central-North.

FORT WAYNE 8, CEDAR RAPIDS 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The TinCaps scored six in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.  The Kernels scored four in the ninth to make the final score look better but did not bring the tying run up to bat.

Batting stars:  Michael Helman was 3-for-4 with a home run (his fifth) and two runs.  Trey Cabbage was 2-for-4.  Leobaldo Cabrera was 1-for-3 with a grand slam (his second homer) and a walk.  Seth Gray was 1-for-5 with a home run, his fourth.

Pitching stars:  Melvi Acosta pitched two innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and striking out one.  Tyler Watson pitched three shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out two.

Opposition stars:  Jonny Homza was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Ethan Elliott struck out nine in six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk.

Starter:  Owen Griffith pitched one inning, giving up one run on two hits and two walks and striking out one.  It appears to have been a bullpen game for the Kernels.

Good stats:  Watson has an ERA of 2.70.  Acosta has an ERA of 2.81.

Bad stats:  Chris Williams was 0-for-3 and is batting .071.  Cabrera is batting .185.  Jair Camargo was 0-for-4 and is batting .191.  Griffith has an ERA of 7.82.  Tyler Palm allowed six runs (two earned) in two innings and also has an ERA of 7.82.

Record:  The Kernels are 11-16, in fifth place in the High-A Central-West, 5.5 games behind Quad Cities.

FORT MYERS 7, ST. LUCIE 0 IN FORT MYERS (8 INNINGS--RAIN)

Kyle Schmidt homered to start a two-run fifth and two pitchers took it from there.

Batting stars:  Schmidt was 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk.  Keoni Cavaco was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Yunior Severino was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Louie Varland struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks.  Steven Cruz struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition star:  J. T. Ginn pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out one.

Good stats:  Schmidt is batting .364.  Edouard Julien was 1-for-3 and is batting .314.

Bad stats:  Justin Washington was 0-for-4 and is batting .080.  Aaron Sabato was 1-for-4 and is batting .163.  Misael Urbina was 1-for-3 and is batting .192.  Cruz lowered his ERA to 6.75.

Record:  The Mighty Mussels are 14-13, in third place in the Low-A Southeast-West, five games behind Tampa.
