Minor Details: Games of June 23

A good day for Brent Rooker.  Josh Winder keeps rolling.  Kernels pitchers throw fourteen shutout innings and get the benefit of a walkoff grand slam.  Jeferson Morales gives the Mighty Mussels another win.

COLUMBUS 7, ST. PAUL 6 IN COLUMBUS

The Clippers led 7-1 after three.  The Saints closed to 7-6 and had men on second and third with none out in the ninth, but could not bring them home.

Batting stars:  Brent Rooker was 3-for-4 with three doubles and a walk.  Tomas Telis was 2-for-5.  Willians Astudillo was 2-for-5.  Mark Contreras was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer, his third.

Pitching stars:  Juan Minaya struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Andrew Vasquez struck out four in two perfect innings.  Yennier Cano struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Andres Gimenez was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Trenton Brooks was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Triston McKenzie pitched four innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and four walks and striking out three.

Starter:  Rob Whalen lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks and striking out one.

Good stats:  Astudillo is batting .300.

Bad stats:  Keon Broxton was 0-for-3 and is batting .149.  Whalen has an ERA of 9.95.

Record:  The Saints are 20-23, tied for fourth place in the AAA East-Midwest, ten games behind Omaha.

WICHITA 8, MIDLAND 4 IN MIDLAND

The Wind Surge built an 8-0 lead through six and a half.

Batting stars:  Aaron Whitefield was 3-for-4 with a double.  Andrew Bechtold was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fifth), a walk, three runs, and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Josh Winder struck out seven in seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  Adam Lau pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Kyle McCann was 2-for-4.  Nick Allen was 2-for-5.  Austin Briggs struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Good stats:  Jose Miranda was 0-for-3 and is batting .331.  Whitefield is batting .307.  Lau has an ERA of zero.  Winder has an ERA of 1.98.

Bad stats:  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 1-for-3 and is batting .143.  Peter Mooney was 0-for-4 and is batting .148.  David Banuelos was 1-for-2 and is batting .150.  Jordan Milbrath allowed three runs in a third of an inning and has an ERA of 16.88.  Calvin Faucher allowed no runs in two-thirds of an inning and has an ERA of 9.00.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 25-19, in first place in the AA Central-North, a half game ahead of Tulsa.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, LANSING 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

It was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when Gabriel Maciel hit a walkoff grand slam.

Batting stars:  Trey Cabbage was 2-for-3.  Maciel was 1-for-3 with a grand slam.

Pitching stars:  Jon Olsen pitched five shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks and striking out four.  Jordan Gore struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.

Opposition star:  Bryce Nightengale struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.  The Lugnuts had only one hit.

CEDAR RAPIDS 1, LANSING 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

The only run scored on an error in the sixth inning.

Batting stars:  None.  The Kernels had just three hits.

Pitching stars:  Andrew Cabezas struck out six in five shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks.  Owen Griffith struck out three in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Cobie Vance was 2-for-3.  Seth Shuman struck out six in five shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Good stats:  None.

Bad stats:  Chris Williams was 0-for-2 and is batting .100.  Michael Helman was 0-for-3 and is batting .195.  Griffith has an ERA of 5.66.

Record:  The Kernels are 24-20, in second place in the High-A Central-West, five games behind Quad Cities.

FORT MYERS 3, PALM BEACH 2 IN PALM BEACH (10 INNINGS)

Jeferson Morales' RBI double brought home the go-ahead run in the tenth.

Batting stars:  None.

Pitching stars:  Miguel Rodriguez pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk and striking out three.  Steven Cruz retired all seven men he faced, striking out three.  Matthew Swain struck out three in two perfect innings.  Denny Bentley struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Jacob Buchberger was 2-for-4.  Franklin Soto was 2-for-4.  Edgar Manzo struck out five in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Good stats:  Edouard Julien was 0-for-1 and is batting .316.  Kyle Schmidt was 1-for-4 and is batting .302.  Rodriguez has an ERA of 2.60.

Bad stats:  Willie Joe Garry, Jr. was 1-for-4 and is batting .169.  Justin Washington was 0-for-3 and is batting .182.  Aaron Sabato was 0-for-3 and is batting .186.  Will Holland was 1-for-4 and is batting .190.  Misael Urbina was 1-for-5 and is batting .194.  Swain has an ERA of 5.47.

Record:  The Mighty Mussels are 27-17, in third place in the low-A Southeast-West, 2.5 games behind Tampa.
