Minor Details: Games of July 11

The Saints get two hits in fourteen innings.  Andrew Bechtold hits a big home run.  Tyler Watson is pitching well.  A good game for Keoni Cavaco.

IOWA 1, ST. PAUL 0 IN IOWA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

The Saints got zero hits.  The game's only run scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.

Batting stars:  None.

Pitching stars:  Beau Burrows pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and no walks and striking out two.  Matt Shoemaker pitched three shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out two.

Opposition stars:  Alfonso Rivas was 2-for-3 with a double.  Justin Steele struck out five in 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and two walks.  Dillon Maples struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up no hits and two walks.

Good stats:  Jose Miranda was 0-for-3 and is batting .326.  Shoemaker made his Saints debut and has an ERA of zero.

Bad stats:  Keon Broxton was 0-for-1 and is batting .179.  Drew Stankiewicz was 0-for-3 and is batting .188.  Burrows has an ERA of 5.09.

IOWA 3, ST. PAUL 2 IN IOWA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

The Saints again lost in the bottom of the seventh.  Abiatal Avelino's two-run single brought home the tying and deciding runs.

Batting star:  Sherman Johnson was 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk.

Pitching star:  Andrew Albers struck out nine in six innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Avelino was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Adrian Sampson pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks and striking out four.

Good stats:  Jose Miranda was 1-for-4 and is batting .319.

Bad stats:  David Banuelos was 0-for-3 and is batting .161.  Keon Broxton was 0-for-2 and is batting .176.  Roberto Pena was 0-for-2 and is batting .185.  Nick Vincent allowed two runs while retiring no one and has an ERA of 7.11.

Record:  The Saints are 28-31, in fourth place in the AAA East/Midwest, 9.5 games behind Omaha.

WICHITA 5, NORTHWEST ARKANSAS 3 IN WICHITA

Andrew Bechtold homered in the sixth to make it 3-3 and the Wind Surge added two in the seventh to win it.

Batting stars:  Leobaldo Cabrera was 2-for-3.  Roy Morales was 2-for-4.  Bechtold was 1-for-3 with a home run (his tenth) and a walk.  Aaron Whitefield was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his fifth.

Pitching stars:  Aaron Rozek made his AA debut and pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.  Ryan Mason struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Freddy Fermin was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fifth) and two RBIs.  Kevin Merrill was 2-for-4 with a home run and a double.  Clay Dungan was 2-for-4.

Starter:  Bryan Sammons struck out seven in five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk.

Good stats:  Rozek has an ERA of zero.  Mason has an ERA of 2.67.

Bad stats:  Sammons has an ERA of 6.19.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 33-27, in first place in the AA Central/North, a half game ahead of Arkansas.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, PEORIA 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Both Kernels runs scored in the fifth.  The Chiefs got one in the ninth and had men on first and second when the game ended.

Batting stars:  Wander Javier was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Alex Isola was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Watson pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out two.  Breckin Williams pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Derek Molina retired all eight men he faced, striking out two.

Opposition stars:  Brady Whalen was 2-for-4.  Connor Lunn pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and a walk and striking out none.

Good stats:  Williams has an ERA of zero.  Watson has an ERA of 2.16.

Bad stats:  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 0-for-3 and is batting .125.

Record:  The Kernels are 34-26, in second place in the High-A Central/West, five games behind Quad Cities.

FORT MYERS 13, ST. LUCIE 9 IN ST. LUCIE

The Mighty Mussels scored six in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead, fell behind 9-8, and scored five in the seventh to win it.

Batting stars:  Keoni Cavaco was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk.  Jeferson Morales was 2-for-3 with three walks and three runs.  Misael Urbina was 1-for-6 with a home run (his second) and three RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Juan Pichardo struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  Matthew Swain pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.  Denny Bentley pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Jaylen Palmer was 5-for-6 with two doubles and two runs.  Matt Dyer was 2-for-2 with a home run (his seventh) and a double.  Sammy Tavares struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three walks.

Starter:  Miguel Rodriguez struck out six in 4.2 innings but allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks.
