Minor Details: Games of August 6

An excellent game by Chandler Shepherd.  Trey Cabbage goes deep twice.  Louie Varland continues to pitch well.  Jeferson Morales gets the big hit.

ST. PAUL 1, LOUISVILLE 0 IN ST. PAUL

The game's lone run came in the eighth on a Sherman Johnson homer.

Batting stars:  Johnson was 2-for-3 with a home run, his third.  Tomas Telis was 2-for-3.

Pitching stars:  Chandler Shepherd pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks and striking out three.  Yennier Cano struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  Kyle Barraclough pitched a perfect inning.  Nick Vincent struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition star:  Michael Mariot pitched seven shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks and striking out none.

Good stats:  Jose Miranda was 1-for-4 and is batting .345.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-3 and is batting .343.  Gilberto Celestino was 1-for-3 and is batting .300.

Bad stats:  J. T. Riddle was 0-for-2 and is batting .189.  Shepherd has an ERA of 5.88.

Record:  The Saints are 43-38, in third place in the AAA East/Midwest, 3.5 games behind Omaha.

WICHITA 11, MIDLAND 4 IN WICHITA

The Wind Surge scored four in the first and led all the way.

Batting stars:  Trey Cabbage was 3-for-5 with two home runs (his eighth and ninth), three runs, and five RBIs.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Chris Vallimont struck out eight in five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks.  Jordan Gore struck out four in two shutout innings.

Opposition stars:  Max Schuemann was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, and two runs.  Jhonny Santos was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his eighth.

Good stats:  Austin Martin was 1-for-4 and is batting .385.  Gore has an ERA of 2.45.

Bad stats:  Alex Phillips gave up two runs in two innings and has an ERA of 6.58.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 47-35, in first place in the AA Central/North, three games ahead of Tulsa.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, QUAD CITIES 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The Kernels scored three in the first and led all the way.

Batting stars:  Yunior Severino was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Alex Isola was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Louie Varland pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks and striking out five.  Melvi Acosta retired all four men he faced, striking out three.  Zach Featherstone struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three walks.

Opposition stars:  Gavin Stupienski was 2-for-3.  Garrett Davila struck out four in four shutout innings of relief, giving up two hits.

Good stats:  Severino is batting .344.  Varland has an ERA of 0.83.  Featherstone has an ERA of 2.31.

Bad stats:  DaShawn Keirsey was 0-for-3 and is batting .190.  Edouard Julien was 0-for-1 and is batting .192.

Jeferson Morales hit a two-run homer in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie.

Batting stars:  Morales was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his seventh.  Willie Joe Garry, Jr. was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Bobby Milacki struck out five in four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk.  Matthew Swain struck out five in three perfect innings.

Opposition star:  P. K. Morris was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Good stats:  None.

Bad stats:  Justin Washington was 0-for-2 and is batting .153.  Garry, Jr. is batting .177.  Jesus Feliz was 0-for-4 and is batting .195.  Misael Urbina was 0-for-2 and is batting .199.
