August 16, 2021: Bizarro

So, against their last three opponents, the Twins have series wins against the AL West leader, the AL Central leader, and now the AL East leader. I mean, sure, why not.

  1. So, do we draw any conclusions from the Twins' recent success? Or do we just say, "That's baseball"?

    1. Little of this, little of that. I think our rookie pitchers are at least giving the lineup a chance to win by keeping the team in the ballgame. Not to mention jettisoning a couple from the relief corps as well

    2. I'd think it helps support the notion that there was a lot of talent on the team, and the early-season Covid issues and extra-inning games stuff just really derailed them.

I still hate that Berrios is gone, but I think the window was going to close on this group soonish, and refreshing the minor leagues might well have opened up a new window in much shorter order.

        1. Yup. But how often does that actually happen? It takes a broken season like this one more times than not, right?

    3. Bullpen success is important?

Dates Bullpen ERA Bullpen WHIP Starters ERA Starters WHIP Runs Scored/G
      March 31 to July 31 4.99 1.364 4.96 1.315 4.64
      August 1 to August 15 3.46 1.171 5.14 1.386 4.54

Starters ERA, Starters WHIP, and Twins run scoring have been pretty much the same in August as the rest of the year.

      1. Inherited runners are not scoring at a 70% clip anymore, which helps quite a bit. It's down to 48% now, still more above the league average of 35% than you'd like to see.

      2. adding to DG's number: last 14 days the sOPS+ for opponents is 100 (and 101 for last 28 days), compared to 112 on the season. For relievers in August, sOPS+ is 87 (106 for Mar/Apr, 131 May, 104 June, 110 July). That's a pretty big bullpen improvement. OOPS for relievers in August is 666, for starters 845.

  2. Kevin Fiala signs a one-year deal with the Wild for next season.

Basically punting on negotiations this summer and starting over next year. The Wild will have a bunch of cap space this year to maybe make another addition (before the season or in-season).

      1. I like working the Delta Sky Club sections in front of the press box. But I would love a full time gig doing almost anything.
