Minor Details: Games of August 18

Trevor Larnach homers in his return to St. Paul.  Tyler Beck is sharp for Wichita.  Louie Varland and Jeferson Morales lead Cedar Rapids.  Rain was the winner in the FSL.

IOWA 11, ST. PAUL 7 IN ST. PAUL (10 INNINGS)

The Saints trailed 5-1, led 6-5, trailed 7-6, then tied it 7-7.  Ian Miller hit a three-run homer in a four-run tenth for the Cubs.  The Cubs are baby bears, and bears are cool.

Batting stars:  Mark Contreras was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Tomas Telis was 2-for-5 with a home run (his ninth) and two runs.  Jimmy Kerrigan was 2-for-5 with a home run, his seventeenth.  Trevor Larnach was 1-for-5 with a home run, his third.  Gilberto Celestino was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer (his fourth) and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Ryan Mason pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.  Chris Nunn struck out three in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Greg Deichmann was 2-for-2 with a home run (his ninth), two runs, and two RBIs.  Jared Young was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Miller was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer (his second), a walk, and two runs.

Starter:  Chandler Shepherd pitched five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks and striking out three.

Good stats:  Jose Miranda was 1-for-6 and is batting .339.  Nunn has an ERA of zero.

Bad stats:  Shepherd has an ERA of 5.82.  Robinson Leyer allowed four runs (three earned) in 1.1 innings and has an ERA of 6.62.  Mason has an ERA of 8.22.

Record:  The Saints are 50-42, in third place in the AAA East/Midwest, 1.5 games behind Toledo.

WICHITA 7, SPRINGFIELD 1 IN SPRINGFIELD

Leobaldo Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the fourth to break a scoreless tie.  The Wind Surge added two in the fifth and three in the eighth.

Batting stars:  D. J. Burt was 3-for-4.  Cabrera was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fifth), two runs, and three RBIs.  Aaron Whitefield was 2-for-4.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Beck struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up five hits and two walks.  Bryan Sammons struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Brendan Donovan was 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk.  David Vinsky was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Good stats:  B. J. Boyd was 0-for-5 and is batting .307.  Jordan Gore retired the only man he faced and has an ERA of 2.51.  Beck has an ERA of 2.79.

Bad stats:  Jason Garcia gave up a run in 1.2 innings and has an ERA of 5.40.  Sammons has an ERA of 6.44.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 53-39, in first place in the AA Central/West, three games ahead of Tulsa.

CEDAR RAPIDS 10, WISCONSIN 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Jeferson Morales hit a grand slam in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie.  The Kernels then added three in the fifth.

Batting stars:  Wander Javier was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Morales was 2-for-4 with a grand slam, his second homer.  Edouard Julien was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Michael Helman was 1-for-3 with a home run (his twelfth), a walk, and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Louie Varland pitched seven innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks and striking out six.  Tyler Palm struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Joey Wiemer was 2-for-3 with a home run, his fifth.  Felix Valerio was 2-for-4 with a double.  Carlos Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double.

Good stats:  Morales is batting .444.  Varland has an ERA of 1.60.

Bad stats:  Palm has an ERA of 6.23.

Record:  The Kernels are 51-41, in second place in the High-A Central/West, ten games behind Quad Cities.

FORT MYERS AT DUNEDIN

The game was suspended in the top of the fourth with the Mighty Mussels leading 1-0.  Jesus Feliz homered for the game's only run.  Aaron Rozek struck out four in three shutout innings.
