IOWA 5, ST. PAUL 2 IN ST. PAUL

Abiatal Avelino singled home a run in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie and the Cubs added two more in the ninth.

Batting stars:  Tomas Telis was 2-for-5.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-3 with a home run, his third.

Pitching stars:  Drew Strotman struck out four in four innings, giving up two runs on seven his and two walks.  Yennier Cano struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.  Luke Farrell struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Avelino was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Greg Deichmann was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Cory Abbott pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits and four walks and striking out five.

The Wind Surge scored three in the third to take a 3-2 lead.  They led the rest of the way, but could never pull away until scoring two in the ninth.

Batting stars:  Trey Cabbage was 3-for-4 with a home run (his fourteenth), a walk, and six RBIs.  B. J. Boyd was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs.  Austin Martin was 2-for-5 with a double, three runs, and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Alex Phillips pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Kody Funderburk struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Nick Plummer was 3-for-4 with two home runs (his twelfth and thirteenth), a triple, a walk, two runs, and three RBIs.  Chandler Redmond was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and two runs.  Garrett Williams struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.

Starter:  Chris Vallimont pitched five innings, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks and striking out four.

Pitching stars:  Ryan Shreve struck out five in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.  Denny Bentley pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Joey Wiemer was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer (his sixth) and two runs.  Valerio was 2-for-5 with a home run (his third) and a double.  Carlos Rodriguez was 2-for-5.

Good stats:  Morales is batting .395.  Yunior Severino was 0-for-5 and is batting .382.  Bentley has an ERA of zero.  Shreve has an ERA of 2.90.

Batting stars:  Patrick Winkel was 3-for-4 with a home run, two walks, two runs, and four RBIs.  Jesus Feliz was 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs.  Keoni Cavaco was 3-for-6.  Kyler Fedco was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Garry, Jr. was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, and four RBIs.  Alerick Soularie was 2-for-6.

Pitching stars:  Steven Cruz struck out five in three innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit and one walk.  Juan Pichardo struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.

Bad stats:  Justin Washington was 0-for-5 and is batting .163.  Garry, Jr. is batting .186.  Aaron Sabato was 0-for-3 and is batting .189.  Misael Urbina was 0-for-4 and is batting .190.  Pichardo has an ERA of 5.15.  Matthew Swain gave up three runs in three innings and has an ERA of 5.21.
