August 27, 2021: Flying Blind

The keyboard tray on my desk won't slide out anymore so instead of looking for a new desk like a normal person, I've decided to get better at typing without looking. It's a work in prohtedd.

  1. Welp, not only am I not at the Fair today, I'm prepping my house and place of work in advance of Ida. Things escalated quickly.

    1. I am definitely not a fair person, but I hate that people such as yourself who are and are cognizant of the pandemic aren't able to do something you truely enjoy.

The hurricane is just a kick in the cojones.

      1. If the storm makes landfall on Sunday it will be ... an anniversary. Lots of freaking out in the city today.

  2. Yesterday evening we took a walk from our VRBO to the Broadmoor Hotel area, where they were just wrapping up the 36th Space Symposium -- lots of suits and military attire. The whole area is pretty swanky, plus enough greenspace that we saw several more deer family wandering the yards and alleys. Also one young protester standing quietly with a sign (because Lockheed Martin missiles).

  3. Ronaldo to Manchester United. Wow.

We didn't do a EPL prediction contest this year, which is fine but this could be a humdinger of a season. Man City, ManU, Chelsea, Liverpool all have stacked, healthy (for now) teams. Man City may actually be low on the totem poll now that they've missed out on both Harry Kane and Ronaldo. Should be fun down to the wire and won't get much better than tomorrow's Liverpool at home against Chelsea match. 11:30 local time (televised on the mothership NBC).

    1. You forgot that Everton may never lose again, that West Ham are firing on all cylinders, and that the Seagulls look really good. It's definitely going to be an exciting campaign.

          1. If that happens and (current Championship leaders) Fulham come back up, I would be so happy

  4. I'm eternally grateful for my 8th grade keyboarding class, which taught me to type without looking at the keyboard. (We didn't have broken keyboard trays, so we had to make do with a sheet of paper taped to the keyboard and draped over our fingers.)

The jalapeno missed out on keyboarding instruction thanks to the pandemic, and when I see how he types, I just cringe. Gotta do something about that.

      1. I honestly learned more about how to type from countless hours of IRC/ICQ/MSN/AOL chatting online. Git gud or get left behind.

      2. I had typing as a 9th grader. I sucked (topped out at around 45-50 wpm). But touch typing proved to be a very valuable skill.

Also, the teacher was know to be a black belt in karate, so people paid attention and did not give him grief.

      3. Typing and driving, best two classes high school offers. They can get you a long way in life.

    1. Just seems right that a Minnesota-based hockey team has a guy named Jordie on it (although I would have preferred losing the ie spelling and go with the classic y ending)

    1. Apparently someone at the MN Court System, because I've been trying to deal with an issue for weeks and lots of people can tell me the problem, but no one can tell me how to fix it...

    1. one in, one out.

      1. That's got to be tough to hear, "We're going to open you up, but we don't know what we're actually going to do." If it was Tommy John surgery for sure, at least he'd know what he's facing. The way it sounds, right now he has no real idea.

        1. That's kind of what happened with my shoulder. I went in for a labrum repair and afterwards the surgeon was like "While I was in there I saw your rotator cuff was a mess, so I fixed it too"

          1. Funny, my knee doc said, and did, something similar. Afterword, he asked how much skateboarding and playing catcher I had done in a previous life.

  5. The local school district (where I work, and where Newbish attends) will be requiring masks for staff and K-6.

Popularity of that mandate aside, we told Newbish an hour or so ago that this change was happening...

Us (cringing): "Okay, buddy, when school starts, you're going to have to wear a mask like you did last year."
    Newbish: "Okay"

    1. The school board here sent out a survey last week about masks. The "masking is encouraged" was the most voted for option. Fortunately, the school board decided to ignore that and make them mandatory for everyone in the elementary school regardless of vaccination status. Its option for the high school, which is dumb, but my kids aren't there yet.

  6. It would not be an exaggeration to say there were as many Brewers fans at the game as Twins fans at the game tonight.
