    1. Got a text from him just after 8pm last night that all was well. Hopefully, that remained unchanged throughout the night.

  1. I got two bottles of liquor on clearance yesterday for $7 each. Judging solely by the bottle/labeling, the bourbon was easily believable when it said "Originally $29.99". The brandy, however, should not have been more than $7 to begin with.

    1. Bourbon verdict: I can see why it was clearanced out. $7 is a very fair price for this.

        1. I had like >< this much just to try it since I didn't have any yesterday when I'd bought it and was curious.

  2. I recognize this is a ridiculously small gripe with all that's going on in the world, but it's a pet peeve. I just heard a guy, on a national radio baseball program, refer to "Jose BERRios". The man has been in the majors for six years and has made two all-star teams. Learn to pronounce his name.

    1. I get that announcers are pros and should get it right but I love when fans continually get pronunciations wrong. When I was a kid, my Dad would call Roger Staubach "Starback." Bears fans to the end referred to their failed QB as Trubinsky.

      1. Yeah, fans doing it doesn't bother me at all. A friend of mine used to refer to "Steve Lombardoski".

    2. It's probably just that hispanic players and pronunciations are such a rarity in the game of baseball.

  3. Hot tip for a better work environment during State Fair season. Putting the DNR fish pond livestream on the third screen I'm not using gives me a calming, virtual fish tank during fair season. And not a bad conversation piece.
They went heavy on the schools of bullheads this year. Probably because they're so hard to kill...I know they're not really prized, but I wouldn't mind finding a place to fish for them. They little guys can put up a fight.

      1. my grandfather used to smoke bullheads. I liked them as a kid, but, looking back, he way over-salted and over-smoked them.

Still, they are good eating when smoked.

        1. I have a memory as a kid of my dad taking on skinning some bullheads so we could try and eat them. I don't remember what brought this on. (Probably watched grandpa smoke some when he was little.) I loved going fishing when we were young, but I think dad probably wasn't as enthusiastic about it as it seemed at the time. He also doesn't eat fish, so in retrospect there was a lot of love in that whole endeavor.

    1. Oooh, I'm definitely suggesting this to Mr. NaCl. He's absurdly stressed this week. (And he is obsessed with fish.)

    1. Seems to be blacked out. Man, I was thiiis close to having a fish screen and a baseball screen going.

  4. At the end of June, we lost our youngest cat, Ellie. She was a cranky old cat, but still it was a tough day when we lost her.

My wife just took Jags to the vet. He might not be coming home. This is much tougher. I've lived with Jags for longer consecutively than I have with any human. I just said goodbye to him. Maybe I'll see him again, but probably not.

    1. I am at the vet now to say goodbye. He has been a wonderful pet for a very long time. ❤️❤️💔❤️

      1. It's a sad duty, you have my condolences. I hope we don't have to do it again for many years.

      2. I'm so sorry to hear that, Stick, it's a heartbreaking day. I always enjoyed your posts about the cats.

      3. Oh, damn, Stick. So sorry. But I am glad you got see him off, hard as it is. I have been there.

        1. Indeed. When he was younger, sometimes he'd come up next to me when I was standing up and crouch. I'd tap my chest and he'd jump right up into my arms. I hardly ever picked him up because he didn't like to be picked up against his will and it showed. He would be stressed. But, sometimes, he just needed a hug and he'd come and get it. Affection was on his terms, always, but luckily, he was in need of a lot of affection.

There was also the time when he was about a year or so old and he jumped up my bed in the middle of the night and aggressively licked my face. I woke up, wondering why it was that he was doing this. I soon realized why, as I smelled smoke. It turns out that the apartment building two down from me was on fire and he was agitated to the point that he needed me to help him. He truly was my best buddy.

For those that don't remember his origin story, Lucy called me from work one day. We weren't married or even engaged at that point. She told me the story of how one of her co-workers had brought about a 4 week old cat to work that she had picked up off of the road. His mother and siblings had been run over. He was all alone and vulnerable. Lucy asked if I would take him. because she had a fractious cat who didn't tolerate other cats. I said yes. That day was September 15, 2003. For almost 18 years, he was my cat. Not our cat. My cat. I named him Jags after Mick Jagger, of course. I can't imagine ever having a cat better than Jags.

          1. Boss, I’m so sorry to see this news about Jags. I was delighted to hear he was still around and see him last summer during one of the weekly Zooms Rhu_Ru hosted. The affection shared between the two of you was very clear.

As others have said, I’ve been there with a special pet, a tiny female Bombay who had been abused by her previous owners. Animals seem to have a way of knowing who truly rescued them — at least that’s been my experience. You both were a blessing to each other. May Jags’ memory never fade.
