September 8, 2021: Draft Draft

Well, I scheduled the B-League draft for 8:30 (which I emailed to spooky... *ahem*), but apparently the other league is now scheduled for 8pm. I'm going to bump the B-League back to 9:45pm. Sorry for any confusion, gang.

  1. Would anybody like to play Survival Pick’em?
I debated season-long or survival version. I’d be open to either, but survival is less commitment.
I have it set to the 2-strike option but am open to the 1- or 3- strike version depending on how long people want to drag this out.

    1. I'm in. And apparently I have very little idea for who is good in the NFL now/how they finished last year, except that I anticipate Tampa Bay and KC will remain good? But maybe the Browns aren't awful now?

      Things have changed.

  2. It's so touching to see a heartfelt Blues Clues 25th anniversary message in the news feed to counteract all the depressing news like the incessant Derek Jeter fawning.

  3. Just an update on my Mom--she continues to show no symptoms, but is very frustrated at having to sit alone in her room all day. I don't blame her--it's got to be hard to sit in one little room all day with nothing but the TV for company. I've asked if they can get her some physical therapy or something, even if just in her room, because if she just sits in her chair all day her muscles are going to atrophy and pretty soon she won't be able to walk. They said they'd look into it. Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts--please keep them coming.

  4. The little squirrel spent another night kenneled in our garage after the mother rejected him and apparently wouldn't let him back into the nest. We had an animal rescue volunteer come by today to pick him up and take him to a shelter. He was a little dehydrated but otherwise looks to be in fair health. He'll spend some time recuperating at the shelter, then they'll take him to the Squirrel Lady. She lives down by the Iowa state line and has a whole community of rescued squirrels that she cares for.

  5. I’ve been back in the city since Sunday. We’ve cleaned up most everything. Had to buy a new rake because broke the old one. Trash hasn’t been picked up for days. I need you all to imagine what 95 plus degrees and a hundred percent humidity does to an entire city’s worth of regular trash not being picked up for a week and a half and then multiply by whatever smell flavor an entire city’s worth of freezer and fridge contents adds to the mix. Holy sweet Jesus. They picked up the trash and the smell is worse because every time the trash truck stops the liquid gravy pours out of the bottom of the compactor. Holy. God. Alrighty.

The odor has volume equivalent to the Metallica’s speed of sound tour.

  6. got my "random selection" invite from NSF to participate in their annual survey of doctorate recipients. This feels like about the 4th year in a row I have been "randomly selected."

    1. Look at you, hogging all the survey slots! I don't think I've ever been selected in the 9 years I've been eligible.

  7. Three years into owning our current home we're working to tackle our first big home improvement project - adding egress windows in the basement for the future addition of a couple bedrooms.

After a lot of online reading/youtube tutorial watching, I think I've got a decent enough idea of the process. I am also well aware that I'm not exactly fast when it comes to this kind of work. So, anticipating that the process will take a bit, we're starting a few weeks out from when we're actually hoping to do the actual build - get the ground dug ahead of time, buy all the materials, etc. Hopefully a few weeks will be enough time, right?

Well, a few days in and I'm already starting to get nervous. It turns out I still overestimated my speed - heck, it took me twice as long to just buy the materials because they just barely didn't fit in my vehicle, and we had to drive all the way home, borrow a truck, and drive back to pick stuff up Then last night we started digging and... wasps. Aristotle got stung at least 4 times.

I sprayed over lunch today, and removed the nest, so hopefully tonight we can actually get some of the top layer rock removed. I'm sure there'll be something else that complicates this though.

    1. This is not a project that I would tackle on my own. I am a cheapwad, so I like to do things myself. But, I've got it my head that if I put in egress window(s) and the chance of that happening is not zero, I'm gonna hire it done.

      1. I definitely have both some historical skills in the construction area (I spent every summer shingling roofs in high school, helped my dad build an addition, have helped my brothers do their basements, etc.) and some promised help from more skilled persons (my aforementioned father and brothers). So even though my experience is more distant in time, my cheapwad sensibilities are definitely dominating this project.

        1. My father added an egress window when we were kids. I recall he combined your two methods and hired a contractor while assisting. I think he did the digging part and the contractor did the window framing and install.

    2. This is a great investment in your home.

I’ve done the egress windows install twice: once in 1997 where I did all the grunt labor of digging, hauling (dirt/clay), sawing then sledging and hauling (cinder blocks) and assisted in the framing & install. Took us the whole summer, but I got the bedroom made possible by the window.

The second time this past year, where I paid a guy to do it. I generally want to do all the home improvement projects myself, but it nearly always takes 1.5 times as long as I think it should take me, which is typically already twice as long as a professional would take. So better judgment prevailed and I hired it out. Best decision I could have made. Guy found a century-old 3’ x 4’ x 7’ deep coal chute, hidden about 6 inches under the river rock landscaping. The walls were 6-8 inches thick & made of form-poured concrete and reinforced with … everything: rebar, turned steel railing supports, bricks, clay tile, small boulders and softball-sized rocks. Required the use of a pneumatic jackhammer to demolish.

      1. Oof, I can't even imagine how awful it would have been to do that second one yourself.

This is a great investment in your home.

This, but also I'm thinking my kids having their own rooms (and/or space for hosting a study abroad student) is going to be a great investment for our family life.

        1. This is a great investment in your home.

Poorly phrased - I meant what you said. Getting additional living space for your kids/family is huge. The addition of actual, natural light - sunlight!!! - in our basement has been a game changer. There were no windows before we added the egress windows.

  8. The USMNT is beyond inept. The outside backs keep getting caught asleep on defense, and centerback John Brooks might lose a footrace to Matthew LeCroy. There is no midfield (thanks to Weston McKennie breaching the bubble and getting kicked out). The offensive strategy is:

    1. dribble forward until a defender is in front of you;
    2. when a defender is front of you, turn around and pass the ball backwards;*
    3. after receiving the backwards pass, immediately play a square ball; and
    4. after receiving a square ball, then:
    a. if you are covered, immediately pass the ball to Honduras; or
    b. if you are uncovered, return to step 1 above
*Christian Pulisic excepted. If you are Christian Pulisic, then beat two defenders off the dribble before dribbling into three more defenders and force a horribly ineffective pass into traffic that is ten feet behind your teammate or have the ball stolen before you make an ineffective pass

    It's beyond disgusting.

    1. I should add that Honduras is allowing a ridiculous amount of space on the flanks that they didn't bother to exploit... UNTIL JUST NOW! 1-1!

      1. So inserting two actual wingbacks to provide width and to move your second-best player to his actual position in midfield did the trick. Who would have thunk?
