  1. The NWSL mess is such a ... *gestures vaguely* thing.

Building any kind of structure in our society inevitably seems to have some of the worst aspects of our society brought along with it. It's hard to see these new leagues (that are so often women's leagues because they didnt exist before for a lot of the same reasons that are messing up their leadership now ... *deep breath*) struggle so much with that while trying to grow and find an audience.

  2. Got a text last night that my father fell again, this time on his other hip, and this time it broke. He was just to the point where he was maybe ready to return home from the previous fall, too. *sigh*

    1. I don’t think I can appreciate how frustrated & upset your dad must feel, but I definitely know the concern for him you’re doubtless feeling, Rhu_Ru. Wishing you both well.

      1. Sounds like what my wife was dealing with with her father and his falls. Very scary. Positive thoughts coming your way from Horseheads, NY.

  3. Also, since I'm here....

I finally figured out how to get live League One scores (Haway the Lads! Go Sunderland) on my home screen without having to remember theres a match. So far today Sunderland, who's top of the table and hasn't lost in a month, is down 4-0, so I have to look at that score every time I open my phone.

    *sad trombone*

  4. FYI, the Twins are looking to fill a couple hundred usher and event security positions for next year. They'll be taking applications later this month. As gig work goes, it doesn't get much better.

  5. Happy as I am for LaMonte Wade Jr.’s success, this passage stung:

The 2021 Giants will go down as authoring one of the most accomplished seasons in major-league history. And their most inspirational player is a 27-year-old son of two proud U.S. Postal Service retirees who never commanded acclaim on prospect lists, who had played in 42 major league games when he arrived in an unheralded trade with the Minnesota Twins one week before pitchers and catchers reported to spring training and who kept winning hearts and minds despite never campaigning or calling attention to himself.

Wade hasn’t appeared overwhelmed at any point. Not when he steps in the batter’s box to take on a pressurized moment in the ninth inning, when he’s 13-for-23 at the plate with a host of game-changing hits. And not when he’s asked to process his success. But when they told him he was the Willie Mac Award winner? When a ballpark and a host of former winners praised him in a pregame ceremony? When his father, LaMonte Sr., beamed with pride and his mother, Emily, wiped away her wet cheeks so she could take the baseball and focus on delivering a ceremonial first pitch to her eldest son?

“I was not anticipating this at all,” he said, after catching a loopy but true throw that arrived without a bounce.

If Wade batted right-handed, I suspect he’d still be a Twin. I know Jake Cave has several years of control left, but the front office should ask itself what those are actually worth over the opportunity cost of his 40-man spot.

      1. I feel like until a mediocre last year and a back fracture this year, he was one of the better fourth outfielders in baseball.

I'm still betting that the Twins win that trade.

        1. Cave has 1.7 WAR in four seasons. Gil has 0.8 in six starts.

I'd take the other side of that bet.

  6. Scrolling thru channels at the hotel in upstate NY - tomorrow is NBBW's Wine Glass Marathon in Corning.

Just came across Billy Graham classics. You can't play this! He's been dead since 2018! It's like those people who use Jimmy Dean's voice for the breakfast sausages. He died in 2010.

Now I'm going to have Big Bad John in my head for the rest of the day.

  7. If Seattle wins tonight, there is a relatively decent possibility that there could be a 4-way tie for the two American League Wildcard slots. Assuming Seattle wins tonight, would need Yanks and Sox to lose Sunday and Jays and Mariners to win.

    1. For those who believe, the 8th inning of Saturday's Angels/Mariners game was quite the roller coaster.

Luckily, the dream is still alive.
