I mean, it does, but if we just left it to umpire's discretion, wouldn't that be even more bunk? What are you supposed to do in that case? What if it happened in a different part of the field, where it would likely be a single where the runner wouldn't even get third?

That looked like a ground-rule double to me. Yeah, it sucks for the hitting team, but ground-rule doubles almost always do.
I understand it's how the rule is written, but that really should be treated more like a ball thrown into a dugout.
