  1. AFL report:

    Surprise 9, Scottsdale 7.

Matt Wallner was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, his sixth. He is batting .302.
Michael Helman was 0-for-2. He is batting .224.
Evan Sisk struck out two in one inning, but gave up one run on one hit and two walks. His ERA is 7.59.

  2. A student (who attended class in the morning) emailed me in the evening with the following question:

I know we covered all the alkyne material in class today (11/16), but what did we not cover in today's lecture?

The temptation to respond with an exhaustive list of topics not covered is pretty high.

  3. Ok you amateur (and professional?) chemists in the group. Had a guest today order a sierra mist. Poured into a glass from our soda fountain. When she was away from the table, the man she was with handed the glass to a server and said something was wrong with it. By the time it got back to my office there was still ice in it, but all of the soda turned into what looks like chopped up jello. Because the guy is creepy to begin with, I am suspecting he dropped something in the drink. I called the cops who took a look at it and said they have never seen anything like it. They tagged and bagged it just in case a complaint arises regarding this couple. They are not going to send it to the BCA unless there is a complaint. A short time on google gives me no answers. Anyone have any idea of what could cause a soda to turn to jello?

    1. So I sent this to my chemistry masters owning brother who also worked for the BCA for a bit and he pretty much said it would have to be gelatin to make it a solid, so either this dude is very incompetent or, uh, I have no idea.

          1. As I researched this I see that some of the stuff these creeps dump in drinks are in powder form. Gelatin is in powder form usually. I wonder if this dude tried to buy a sedative off the street and the buyer either wanted to teach him a lesson, or try to rip him off. Either way, this has been a pretty worrisome experience.

Last month, my son (22 years old) and 3 of my line cooks went to a dive bar after work late one night. They had 3 girlfriends with them. Someone bought all of them a round of shots. The girls refused to drink it. 3 of the guys each downed 2. After 2 other drinks, my son had to help carry two of the guys out to their girlfriend's vehicles. He went back in to pay, and everything went black. He woke up in the morning in the ER. He was pretty messed up the next day and it wasn't until all stories got collaborated that they all realized they had be drugged. It's a f$#k'd up world we live in.

            1. Damn, that's wild. Be right back, telling my daughter to refuse any drink someone else buys even though she's only 10 right now.

            2. That is terrifying.

I find myself very curious about law enforcement's thoughts about your son's situation (were complaints filed there, are they treating that differently than the "not doing anything unless a complaint is filed" approach, etc.).

            3. We talked to our girls about date rape drugs many years ago. They learned never to leave a drink unattended, and never to accept a drink they didn't actually see poured or opened with their own eyes. In college, Elder Daughter volunteered to answer phones at a rape hotline. She went through a training program but in the end she only lasted a few shifts. She's incredibly caring and empathetic, but the things she heard were just too much for her to handle emotionally. She lost a lot of faith in humanity for awhile after that experience.
