    1. I give up. I keep trying to make an Arrested Development reference by embedded video or image, but none of them are working for me, and it isn't worth the effort.

Something something Tobias needing to go to the hospital.

      1. Yeah, like the guy in the $5,000 suit has time to get his links working properly

    2. I hit black ice on my way to my annual physical this morning. Much skidding about on that stuff for a furlong or so.

  1. Has anyone given their dogs back to the rescue organization when going on vacation and then re-adopted later? Seems like a cheaper option than a kennel.

    1. We're cat people and that's easier, but wife has said she might someday want a dog. Somebody needs to make a dog-share app or something. Not actually sharing (or maybe?), but trading dog-sitting credits or some such exchange.

      1. That would be great.

We've had family volunteer once to watch the dogs. They learned their lesson.

      2. These two new cats we have are not easy. Sure, you don't have (or can't) walk them. But, good God they get into everything. A few days ago, they got into my air pod case and somehow got the air pods out. One was on the floor, the other was in a basket of stuff along with a baby carrot(!). This morning, I came into the living room to find a piece of bread on the living room floor, along with one of those sponge scouring pads for doing dishes. Anything, anything that isn't secured or really heavy is fair game.

          1. My first cat Jags was 4 weeks old when I got him. He was a kitten, etc., but he NEVER did what these guys do. They are unbelievable. But every morning when I get up to make coffee, Ralphie comes into the kitchen and tugs at my robe until I pick him up. He watches the coffee making process from my arms. Then he follows me to the couch and lays in my lap while I drink my morning cuppa. He's pretty great during that half hour period of the day. Then his brother gets up and the mayhem starts.

            1. Our new cats have started to reach out and paw at my face when lying down at night. Their claws grow too fast to keep them from getting sharp, I've not slept well over the last week.

Thankfully they don't get into too much when roaming the house, other than any food left out.

Now if I can just figure out how to get the dogs to have any bit of chill about the cats.

        1. Our little Lou has finally started to mellow out, he's about 8 months old now. He's still very entitled and demanding, but not so much rough and tumble anymore.

  2. Stick inadvertently reminded me of one of the most ridiculous sporting achievements in history: Michael Carter's utter destruction of the high school shot put record in 1979.

Carter extended the record by NINE FEET that year. In his final competition, at the Golden West, he set the record that still stands, 81'3.5", beating the second-place finisher by 17 feet. That record is still 2 feet further than the second best put in US HS history, 42+ years later.

I was a sophomore shot putter in high school at that time, coming off a freshman year in which I was absolutely killing 9th-grade competition (9th grade boys use the 8-lb shot; varsity uses the 12-lb; college/international use 16-lb) and getting to throw varsity on occasion. I fantasized being the next Michael Carter. Alas, I did not grow to be a 255-lb senior who could run a 4.6 40.

    1. Wait the world record in shot put is around 76 feet. Is this because of the heavier ball?

      1. Yes. The world record for the 16-lb shot is 23.37 meters (76'8.25"), set by Ryan Crouser on June 18, 2021 (US Olympic Trials; he later won the Olympic gold with a throw about 3 inches shorter), replacing Randy Barnes' 23.12 meters from way back in 1990.

  3. I posted a comment earlier this week and then deleted it because it sounded too angry.

My unvaccinated cousin, 45, with no underlying health issues, died of Covid on Tuesday. I have been very angry all week at him for not getting the vaccine and putting his young family in this situation. The anger is subsiding now and I'm feeling the sadness of this loss and my heartbreak for his mother, my mom's sister, who begged him to get the vaccine. His brother, I think, remains unvaccinated. I don't understand this. I hope he has gotten vaccinated now.

    1. It was just this type of situation that I feared last year in my household. I couldn't send my daughter to school, have her get it, pass it to me and kill me. She needs me to stay alive. That was more important than anything else. Now, the very thing I feared has happened to someone close to me, who had less financial means to deal with such a loss, forgetting the emotional loss and devastation of losing a parent at such a young age (three kids, ages 6 to 15).

      1. That is a horrific situation. I’m sorry for the pain his death is causing for those he left behind, particularly his children.

The wounds and hard feelings that were all too preventable are going to persist for generations. The only thing I really have to say about people who refuse to get vaccinated is that they’re choosing to learn their lessons the hard way, and that I hope they don’t kill anyone else in learning them. As for the people who have enabled and promoted anti-vaccination rhetoric for a decade-plus, it’s hard not to wish that they reap the whirlwind.

        1. One of the things that I have learned working as a professional in two different disciplines is to respect experts. People are fallible, but I've worked with people in both professions who are much smarter and better at the job than me. I've also learned as an attorney that I'm gonna stay in my own lane within the legal profession. Not gonna handle any complex litigation, no siree.

Which is to say that if the medical or scientific community comes to a consensus about something, I'm going to trust them. Makes more sense than listening to some rando on FB or whatever platform.

    2. A relatively distant cousin's unvaccinated husband died of COVID recently, also leaving a young family. Said cousin's sister (my other cousin) wrote something on FB saying how horrible it was that people were asking if he had been vaccinated or not. There was a lot of agreement in the comments below including someone asking "would you ask if someone had been wearing a seatbelt that died a car crash!?" Yes, yes, I would definitely want to know the answer to those questions.

      1. my neighbor (mid-80s) died the sunday after Thanksgiving from a brain aneurysm. His daughter (in a position of responsibility in Maui's anti-COVID efforts) told us that our mail delivery person had commented to her that the vaccine might have killed him.

        hooo boy.

      2. Were they wearing a seat belt? Was there any alcohol involved? How fast were they going? What were road conditions like? Was the car in good repair? Hell yes I'm asking, inquiring minds want to know.

  4. Oh man, this list at the end...

I love the person who wants to tell the world he or she is BRKE AF by spending extra money on a personalized license plate

        1. Today I saw YEA ME. I was wondering what kind of person would get that.

Someone in the garage at work has I CANT. I identify more with that one.

    1. I bet they get a lot of those annually. Probably makes that job easier.
I know standards are important, but I'd still like to get a look at the lady driving "MEMAW AF" out on the road.
