  1. Went to the Eye Dr. for the first time in too long this morning (it's been so long that the coating on my glasses was coming off, which is what prompted the visit). Now my eyes are dilated and I'm having a heck of a time looking at a computer screen, or really anything. I don't recall this taking so long to wear off. Dr. noted a few things I've never known before, and predicted that at my age my close-up vision will start giving out in the next few years, calling for bifocals or separate readers.

    Age. I tells ya.

    1. I should probably break down and get prescription glasses. I have a slight astigmatism and while I'm 20/20 in one eye, it's more like 20/30 in the other. Reading is an altogether different animal and I mush have the cheaters or I can't see well enough to read anything close up -- computer screen distance is still good. But, I don't like wearing glasses and the cheaters do a good job of keeping my Covid-2 hair out of my eyes when I tilt them up.

    2. I'm convinced that the markup is huge on progressive lenses. They keep telling me that I'm getting to that age but my eyes haven't changed. Why push something on me that isn't an issue, yet?

I once had a dentist that really pushed a lot of treatments. Whenever I hear someone say they got Invisalign, etc., I can usually guess their dentist.

    3. I've been avoiding bifocals/transitions for years -- I find it's easier to have a work pair of glasses set for arm's length computer work and use my standard pair for everything else.

  2. I've decided to start "blogging like it's 2005" again. Back then it was a community. Folks would tend their little online garden, writing longer things, but also sharing links and videos and so on. We'd drop comments on each other's sites and have some actual conversations. The old SBG haunt was part of what I considered my "ring", and it still today keeps that spirit alive, so I figured it would be nice to share this intention here. The blog has the usual RSS and newsletter options available.

I don't want to pull anyone away from this glorious place, but if you've been feeling an itch you could join me on Micro.blog. It's a bit nerdy and the UI seemed to require a lot of discovery, but after a few days of bathing in it, I've gotten to really like it. There's a community behind the scenes. Comments made there currently appear on my blog and many others (you can use a free account just for comments, bring-your-own-blog, and behind-the-scenes discussions.).

And if you are already blogging, maybe it'd be a good time to remind us all of the link here? Especially if it's not already in the footer.

      1. I'm not really sure. I've lightly used Feedly since Google Reader disappeared and it's been fine. Though I'm not really a power user.

        1. For most people feedly is probably the best bet. I like pocket too but social media is my feed these days. (RIP greader)

I've toyed with micro.blog and am happy to follow along. There are a lot of people turning back to tumbler right now too for similar reasons.

        2. I subscribe to Inoreader, but I’m a heavy RSS reader. I switched a couple years ago from NewsBlur, which I had used since Google Reader shut down.

    1. I added you to the list of Citizen links below. I also pruned the dead links. If any other Citizens wish to return to the blogging world, post it here and I'll add you to the list.

      1. Ah, thanks for the rec! I think I'm going to go with Fastmail, but Zoho is quite tempting. I assume you've not made much use of their doc and spreadsheet apps? If so, any good?

        1. I've only used the mail functionality, so I wouldn't be able to say.

The mail mobile app works well for Andriod, but I know you're an Apple person.

        2. I’ve used Fastmail for closing in on a decade and have been completely satisfied with the quality of the service. I make heavy use of the alias options, but don’t use the calendar feature. Happy to answer questions if you have them.

          1. Thanks, I might! Since I use 1Password, the easy masked emails is a tempting feature I would like to bring in a second domain just for those emails as well. Aliases and sophisticated filtering are other things I'd probably make use of. I don't think I'd use calendars.

  3. California will be prying my Wolf from my cold, dead hands.

The small study — based on measurements from cooktops, ovens and broilers in 53 homes in California — estimated that stoves emit between 0.8 and 1.3 percent of the natural gas they consume as unburned methane, a potent greenhouse gas. During the course of a typical year, three-quarters of these emissions occur when the devices are shut off, the study showed, which could suggest leaky fittings and connections with gas service lines.

More responsively, this study is way, way, way too small to draw any conclusion other than "we need to do more testing and encourage improved fittings and connections."

  4. Andrew Wiggins All-Star starter. Anything is possible!
