Minor Details: Games of June 7

Home runs carry the Saints.  Sawyer Gipson-Long continues to pitch well.

ST. PAUL 10, ROCHESTER 6 IN ST. PAUL

Tim Beckham hit a grand slam in the fourth to break a 4-4 tie.

Caleb Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Beckham was 2-for-4 with a grand slam (his third homer), a double, a walk, two runs, and five RBIs.
Spencer Steer was 2-for-4 with a home run (his seventh) and three runs.
Mark Contreras was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Starter Daniel Gossett pitched five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk and striking out two.
Jake Petricka pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk and striking out one.

The Saints are 25-29, tied for eighth place with Iowa in the International League West, 9.5 games behind Nashville.

ARKANSAS 6, WICHITA 1 IN ARKANSAS

The Travelers opened the scoring with four in the third.

Matt Wallner was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Starter Bryan Sammons pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks and striking out two.
Melvi Acosta pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out two.
Andrew Cabezas pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.

The Wind Surge is 30-20, in first place in the Texas League North, a half game ahead of Tulsa.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, SOUTH BEND 1 IN SOUTH BEND

Leading 1-0, the Kernels scored four in the third.

Seth Gray was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Pat Winkel was 1-for-4 with a home run.
Kyler Fedco was 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, and two runs.

Sawyer Gipson-Long struck out six in six innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk.
Derek Molina struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.
Ryan Shreve struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and one walk.

The Kernels are 34-18, in first place in the Midwest League West, three games ahead of Wisconsin.

DAYTONA 5, FORT MYERS 2 IN DAYTONA

Ruben Ibarra hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Jack Rogers hit a three-run homer in the fifth.

Kala'i Rosario was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.

Steve Hajjar struck out two in two perfect innings.
Niklas Rimmel struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.
Anthony Escobar struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and one walk.
Hunter McMahon struck out two in a perfect inning.

I don't know why Hajjar came out after just two innings.  I hope it might mean they're promoting him to Cedar Rapids, but I have no evidence that is the case.

The Mighty Mussels are 34-17, in first place in the Florida State League West, seven games ahead of Clearwater.

  1. Minor Details will be taking some time off. I leave today to go to United Methodist Annual Conference, an event I'm looking forward to in much the same way one looks forward to a root canal.

      1. Annual conference is a nuisance under the best circumstances, and these are far from the best circumstances.
