  1. Last night I made my debut as a livestream wrestling broadcaster. I don't know much about wrestling--I said I'd do it if they couldn't find anybody else, and you know that goes. When you say, "I'll do it until you find someone else", nobody looks for anyone else. I did have an expert analyst--a former high school wrestler who could handle the technical aspects of what was going on. I don't know how good it was, but I had a lot of fun with it.

    1. I think you need to fully embrace your ignorance of the sport.

"The guy in the red tights just grabbed the guy in the blue tights. Why do they where tights, anyway?"

      1. I wasn't quite that bad, but I did ask some questions that probably seemed obvious to a lot of people. My theory was that there might be grandparents or aunts and uncles who were watching because they had a kid involved, but who didn't really know much about the sport themselves, and so would appreciate having some basics explained to them.

        1. Good on you.

One thing that has been great about the last several years with increases in technology is that local sporting events are broadcast for people to see. When my nephew is playing football, I can watch his games in my living room in Minnesota. That's great! At the end of my dad's life, he really wanted to see those games. He and I watched the last couple of games together in his living room. That brought much to him and these broadcasts bring much joy to people like me (away) and him (shut-in).

There are announcers and the quality varies, but just seeing the action is such a benefit. You are doing good work.

          1. Thank you. With basketball and volleyball, I figure my main job is to identify the players. I've watched livestream games without announcers, and unless you know the kids really well, it's pretty hard to tell who's who. So if I just get that done, I consider it to be at least an improvement over not having anyone.

      2. My dad has a story of going to a wrestling meet in HS. He had a friend who wrestled, but no one else in the friend circle knew the first thing about it (This was Southern Indiana in the 70s. 99.99% basketball country)

The wrestling friend got raked in the eye and, in a fit of rage, full on lifted his opponent over his head and body slammed him. Dad and his friends were like "AWESOME! YEAH GET HIM!", as their only exposure to wrestling was WWF-style (back in the George Steele days). They were very confused when their friend explained that what he did was in fact very illegal and he'd been disqualified

        1. It did cross my mind to make some WWE references, but I decided against it, as it might have been interpreted as disrespectful to the wrestlers.

  2. An interesting article about the complete collapse of the RSN model and what that could mean for MLB's tv rights going forward.

    https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2556602/a-radical-remodel-of-local-sports-tv-may-come-sooner-than-expected

I haven't been able to watch more than four or five Twins games on TV over the past two years. I like listening on the radio, but the impact that it's had on Newbish's interest in the sport has been tremendous. It's now a distant third behind football and golf.

I know that teams like the "get paid in a huge tv bundle and not have to worry about providing any actual product to match" model, but that might be coming to an end (one eye-popping number: Comcast lost ELEVEN PERCENT of its year-to-year customers last year!) And in my opinion, not a moment too soon. The goose isn't laying golden eggs for too much longer, and if baseball insists on making it was hard for potential customers (and thus, the next generation of customers) to consume its product, then it's going to be about as popular as televised racquetball in twenty years.

    1. One interesting quote pulled from Travis Sawchik's Twitter thread on the matter.

A DTC model for MLB (and NBA & NHL) would potentially be more consumer friendly. The league and teams would have to earn subs rather than enjoy the bundle life of cable where most people that pay the bill never watch. What
@TheTradeDesk exec Ashutosh Gangwar told us last year:
Said Gangwar: "If your product is shitty and you are relying just on the distribution to cut you a check every month, you need to look at your product. I won't go into one specific league (🤔), but it will provide the incentive for these guys to have better consumer experiences"

      1. Or they switch to the NFL model and all TV revenue is shared equally. That would be the number one thing to flatten the revenue disparities in the league.

    2. Michael Rand has a pretty good article too. I thought this suggestion was intriguing:

...one could imagine a future where Diamond Sports or a similar company — a middleman, essentially, in the current business model — is eliminated. Teams and/or leagues would control production and distribution of their games to local audiences, via traditional rights fees to cable/satellite/streaming providers and a direct-to-consumer app for those who only want access to one team's games.

Nibs pull quote suggested the same I see.

    3. I have found there are people on the internet who do not think Joe Mauer is a hall of famer. Huh!? Looking forward to making the drive to Cooperstown for that one.
