November 11, 2024: Scheduling

In a strange quirk, the wife and I have today off, but not the kids. I suggested going to see a movie or something with our rare time off together. She suggested cleaning the house.

    1. My cousin called me with personal news this weekend. She’s 36, a scientist, Carleton alumna, extremely thoughtful…and last Monday raised her right hand at Ft. Snelling. She’s headed to Navy OCS the day after Thanksgiving. I told her the Navy is lucky to have her coming aboard and can use all the folks like her that it can get. She made a special trip to tell our grandfather, who is in hospice and preceded us in maritime service.

      1. At one time in my youth I was trying for an appointment to the Naval Academy, but my only path was a congressional nomination and I had no connections and to be honest, my record probably was not quite up to par. A recruiter tried to sell me on joining up and shooting for an enlisted nomination, but I didn't think the odds of getting in that way were very good. At any rate, thank you to all who serve with honor.

  1. Several years ago, I surprised my wife by taking the day off work for her birthday and told her that we could do anything she wanted to do that day. I was expecting going to some museums or some other fun activities, but no, instead she used that opportunity to have me help her rip out our carpet in the basement so that we could start to lay down new flooring.

    I haven't learned.

I texted a buddy of mine and asked if he wanted to hang out this weekend for his birthday. I asked him what he wanted to do. He wanted to know if I'd be up for a D&D campaign (one-shot).

Now, I'm a pretty prolific board gamer. I love playing board games and play a lot of them. However, I'm not a fan of D&D. I've done a few TTRPGs and it's just not an experience that I'm usually down with. So a part of me was a little hesitant, but it is his birthday, and he's been through a lot this year, so I gave a resounding "Sure!"

At least it's more fun than ripping up carpet...

  2. We took off this morning for St. Cloud to go look at a car. Got all the way to Clear Lake and the dealership called to tell me they had just sold it. So we went to Val's for lunch and headed home. On the way back I got the dreaded P0441 engine code. Ran to the parts store and grabbed an evap canister purge solenoid on my Tucson. Should be an easy peasy job, one electrical connector and a vacuum hose on each end. But they put it behind the throttle body and under the throttle cable housing and bracket with just a few inches between the intake manifold and the firewall. So. Remove engine compartment stabilizer bar. Remove battery. Remove air cleaner housing. Remove MAF sensor and the rest of the air intake. Then you can finally see and get your hands on the damn thing. The hoses, especially the back one, were a real pain because they were dry and had spring clamps on them and getting a needle nose pliers in there with room to maneuver it around was a huge pain in the ass. It took an hour to get the old part off and under ten minutes to put it all back together. But it's fixed and only cost me $52.
