Gloria – Beam Me Up

Picking one song from my favorite show of the past ten years proved an incredibly difficult task. Lodge 49 is as packed with incredible music as any show I have ever seen, to say nothing of the content of the show itself.

If you haven't seen Lodge, I can't recommend enough.  Has a real old basement feel.

Sir Douglas Quintet – At The Crossroads

Maybe it's getting older, maybe it is I can only listen to the same songs so many times but I have spent a lot of time the past few years seeking out new to me stuff.  Here is one I stumbled across last year that has been covered by a few folks. Doug Sahm and his crew, 1975 at Austin City Limits

Gabriels – Blame

Morning all. Over the last ten years while I haven't been contributing as much to the WGOM I have been raising my herd and listening to tunes. Hopefully one day we may all benefit from both of those actions but this week you may see some value from the tunes side.

2022, live at Wonderland

Unrelated I had some folks reach out to me privately about the disgusting events from over the weekend in Buffalo. Thanks to the well wishers. This happened in a real food desert neighborhood and local food banks and counseling services could always use any help they can get. Sadly, I know that the Twin Cites know this pain too.  All good vibes are reciprocated.

Brittany Spencer – Sober and Skinny

Over the last year, due almost entirely to the podcast Cocaine and Rhinestones, I have found myself revisiting county music.

If you haven't listened, you should. I would start with the  three part series on "Harper Valley PTA" or the episode on the Kershaw Brothers, especially if you love Neil Young (E-6 signal).

I preface with that as a way of saying for the best of 2021 I would have liked to post any number of the songs I discovered from that podcast. Maybe one day I can get a month to share some of these things. Then again I may get booed out by jobu if I try that.

Instead here is something from 2021 that makes me think of the best parts of classic country music with the best parts of today's music. This song is tragic and funny in a way that only country music can be. It feels like John Prine or Bobby Braddock could have written this song and no one would question it

Just great stuff. I hope you enjoyed.

WGOM Pledge Drive – FTLT on the Wolves

I don't know how many good analogies really exist. Most seem clumsy, if not forced. The ones that don't have been beaten so far into the ground that they have sort of lost any meaning that they once had. I think back to something I heard once in a movie about how if you say a word enough times in a row, it kind of loses all meaning, barely even sounding like a word anymore.

Potential.
Potential.
Potential.
Poe-tench-uhl
Potential.

This Wolves team is pretty fun to watch, right?

Karl-Anthony Towns is evolutionary Tim Duncan
Andrew Wiggins is turning into an absolute scoring machine-- creating images in my head of how people described Bernard King to me
Zach Lavine, seriously, that Zach Lavine is proving to be nearly as effective from the 3 point line as he has been in dunk contests.
Rubio's true shooting percentage has been high in the forbidden zone, if not the restricted area.

See what I mean about analogies being clumsy and forced?

I was surprised when jobu asked me to put together a post about the Wolves for Pledge Week. I haven't posted in over two years here at the WGOM (!). Life kind of gets in the way sometimes. The herd is getting older. The Bison is 5 and The Bisonette is 3. Wife and I just celebrated a wedding anniversary this past weekend. Since I started hanging out at the WGOM in 2008 I have bought three houses and sold two. I had a great job, lost it, Got a bad job and turned it into a good one. Things change, people change, situations change. One thing that has been kind of a constant is a bad Timberwolves team. It reminds me of another show full of clumsy metaphors, Lost. Desmond had Penny and I have the Timberwolves. But then again -- spoiler alert-- something happens with Penny, I think. The whole show got kind of confusing after a little while and the whole thing starts to blend together. One analogy that probably isnt clumsy is Pekovic as Mr. Ecko though.

Some lousy things have happened to some fine folks here over the past few years. Maybe the WGOM has been their constant. The thing that brings them back. The thing that makes you smile when you are having a crummy day.

Maybe it is a Dieng shot from the elbow.
Maybe it is Shabaaz rotating on defense.
Maybe it is Dunn leaping into a lane for a steal.
Maybe it is couting Tyrus Jones' freckles.
Maybe it is cheaptoy's 1000th list comprising of only metal songs on FMD
Maybe it is new guy's twitter account.
Maybe it is hoping that 6 will show up and post one of his homemade photoshops in a gamelog
Maybe it was looking in the CoC everyday in 2016 hoping that Moss will come back with his thoughts about the election...

Everybody needs something to keep them going-- and if that is the WGOM-- even if it is only part time-- and you havent been allowed to talk about politics for like 7 years-- that is a great thing.

Donate some money to keep this thing alive. If you look at it once a week or twenty times a day it is still something worth having.

Sort of like the Timberwolves.

Game 2: Pistons @ Wolves

No game log last night? Come on!?! What was there something else going on that was of interest to citizens?

Anyway, I watched last night so you didn't have to. Here is a lazy run down of the roster and how I felt about their performance last night.

Bennett, Anthony- Looked half way decent, he is going to have a couple of highlight reel dunks this season.
Brewer, Corey- Looked half way decent, he is going to have a couple of highlight reel dunks this season.
Budinger, Chase- Looked half way decent, he is going to get traded this season
Dieng, Gorgui - Looked awesome.
Hummel, Robbie- DNP, he is not going to play a lot this season
LaVine, Zach- DNP, he is not going to play a lot this season
Martin, Kevin- DNP, he is not going to have a lot of motivation this season
Muhammad, Shabazz- Shabazz actually looked like an honest to goodness NBA player last night. He lost weight, played hard and smart. He consistently impressed me last night.
Peković, Nikola - Looked pretty rusty, we are going to talk about how we begrudgingly want to trade him this season.
Robinson, Glenn - DNP, he is not going to play a lot this season
Rubio, Ricky- Ricky looked aggressive, sometimes it looked good, othertimes not so much. He made drives to the rim but pulled up ~10ft too much. He needs to take the ball all the way to the time and learn to finish if he is going to be the leader Flip and co want him to be.
Turiaf, Ronny- DNP, he might be hurt a lot this season
Wiggins, Andrew -Tony Allen has made players better than Wiggins look bad. Wiggins showed a great first step but looked lost for chunks of the game. The relief on his face after making his first free throw got a chuckle out of me.
Williams, Mo- Looked like a gunner last night. I texted my Blazers fan friend and said the worst thing you can hope for is Mo Williams getting hot. The reason being is he thinks he is hot for three weeks. So it sounds like we got JJ with better range?
Young, Thaddeus- Thad is going to shoot 25 times a game. He is in a contract year, wants to get paid, and does not seem to care about making anyone around him better. You are going to hate Thad Young.

I hope to have someone join me tonight. Go Wolves!
