The Haxan Cloak – Excavation

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ4JvOc2xps

So, you guys aren't huge into squeaky voiced dudes singing about stepping on trumpets? That's cool.

We're going to cheat a little today. This is definitely a live video, but it's essentially a DJ set. Plus, the video has a very prepared vibe, but that fits with the song, so it works. This was one of my favorites from last year. I like the cold, blue lighting of this video, and the haze that wafts over the whole thing.

Shout out to Brooks' dark techno playlist on Spotify, which I've been going through over the past couple days, and will continue to plumb the depths of in the near future.

Danielson – Did I Step on Your Trumpet?

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxQ3kZRyTug

Danielson (or, rather, the act of listening to music by the Danielson Famile) can occasionally feel like a "weird for its own sake" thing. The dude sings in this weird, awkward, squeaky falsetto, and the lyrics often seem childish on the surface. He often wears a nine foot tall tree costume on stage. There's a lot of depth here, though.

Daniel sings Christian music, but his style is so... different that the mainstream Christian music market has pretty much entirely forsaken him (I recall back in the day, a Christian radio station I listened to called one of his songs the worst song they had ever heard). Then again, Sufjan Stevens has been an on again, off again member of the collective for a long time now, so I guess he must be doing something right.

He was the subject of an occasionally interesting documentary a few years ago, appropriately called Danielson: A Family Movie.

I am expecting divisive opinions regarding this song.

mewithoutYou – In a Sweater Poorly Knit

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apvKxyR6Vzs

Skip to 50 seconds to avoid babble.

mewithoutYou are a fairly different sort of band, and this is a different sort of video. Accordions, harps, and dancing white dudes are prevalent here, and the song itself sort of eschews their usual aesthetic, which was originally a sort of abrasive, lyrical post-hardcore sound. Aaron Weiss is one of my favorite lyricists, and the album which this song appears on (Brother, Sister) is one of my "desert island" albums.

Lord, those dancing people are obnoxious. I enjoy this performance of the song, though, so this is what you get.

Kye Kye – Honest Affection

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYuYpnEk-ik

Oh, hi. It's my week already? Why didn't someone warn me?

Anyway, I'll start off the week with the stripped down version of what has become by far the most played song of the summer for me. It doesn't quite have the inertia of the original, but it's pretty nice, in its own right.

The album is full of stuff that sounds kind of like CHVRCHES mixed with a more atmospheric M83. "Honest Affection" isn't necessarily representative of the whole of it, but both the single and the album are quite good.

2014 Game 93: Twins @ Rockies

So, that Tulowitzki dude is something else, eh?

Linds has declared this weekend to be Morneau weekend. She's blocked off our schedules to watch the games, and is wearing the Rockie shirt that my aunt got her. She was crowing after last night's win. Good times.

Today, the Twins try to save face by sending Kevin Correia against some new guy named Tyler Matzek. A cursory look at Matzek's bbref page seems imply that he used to be some sort of prospect, but that he's had a tough time keeping the ball in the strike zone through his trip through the minors. I'd be okay with lots of walks today, but the trick will, of course, be silencing Colorado's bats. Let's hope Mr. Correia is up to the challenge.

(editor's note: sorry, hj, I know it's boring to replay a featured image in back-to-back games, but I didn't have time this morning to find a cool, creative commons picture of a Coors Lite can sitting by a ballfield like I wanted to).

2014 Game 73: Sox @ Twins

Hey everybody! It's been a while. Ahem.

A newly rejuvenated Kevin Correia takes the mound for the Twins today. Some of what's transpired over the past couple of starts is probably smoke and mirrors, but as long as the Twins aren't going to bring up either of the pitchers we really want to see (no offense, Mr. Pino), the pitchers we've got right now might as well not suck. As such, I'm happy with any positive steps Correia makes, if only to augment his trade value a bit.

Andre Rienzo takes the mound for the Sox. He has been pretty horrible this year so far (lots of home runs, lots of walks, not all that many strikeouts), and he looks like the sort that the Twins could feast on. He's one of only two Brazillian players, though, so he's got that going for him.

I foresee a high scoring game in which the Twins manage to pull away in the 5th inning.

Go Twins!
