Bruce Springsteen – You Can Never Tell

(been holding onto this post for a bit. started before the man himself passed away, but only made all the more awesome since. definitely a worthy tribute.)

Okay, so I came across this from one of those "You'll Never Believe What Happens Next!!!!!!!11111!!!11" posts, and though I wasn't rendered "speechless", I thought it was pretty cool. Bruce and the boys take an unfamiliar song request from the audience (a very large one, mind you), spend a couple minutes hammering out the specifics, then proceed to play it in front of a crowded stadium. Well played, Bruce.

FMD: Proposed Covers

There's something about cover songs that really appeals to me. Probably the obvious: someone putting a new spin on a classic makes it fresh again. Or maybe it's the less obvious: like a Star Trek alternate universe, it lets you reimagine the world with things changed, but somehow still familiar?

Anyway, this week I thought it might be fun to talk about cover songs that you'd like to see happen.

To kick it off, I'd say Marilyn Manson covering The Police's "Every Step You Take" could be interesting. I'll see if I can think of others.

Chris and Morgane Stapleton – You Are My Sunshine

This song has been around for 80 or so years, performed by everyone from Lawrence Welk, Bing Crosby and Gene Autry to Johnny Cash, Brian Wilson and Low. This version took my breath away. Producer Dave Cobb (known for his work with WGOM favorites Sturgill Simpson & Jason Isbell as well as Shooter Jennings and Stapleton) put together a compilation album this year called Southern Family which is where this tune can be found.

I heard an even cleaner performance of this on Fallon last month, but I could not find it online.
