Winterball Whiparound: The Pitchers

With the winter leagues completed, a final look at how Twins players fared.  We did the batters yesterday; we do the pitchers today.

The good:  Cole DeVries (Mesa) was 2-1, 3.12, 0.92 with 19 strikeouts in 26 innings.  Terry Doyle (Mesa) was 4-0, 1.98, 0.62 with 22 strikeouts in 27.1 innings.  Nelvin Fuentes (Mayaguez) was 1-0, 2.49, 0.83 with 16 strikeouts in 21.2 innings.  Deolis Guerra (Magallanes) was 2-1, 3.71, 1.05 with 23 strikeouts in 26.2 innings.  Pedro Guerra (Magallanes) was 1-1, 3.67, 1.25 with 32 strikeouts in 34.1 innings.  Lester Oliveros (Anzoategui) was 1-1, 1.33, 1.33 with 18 strikeouts in 20.1 innings.  Luis Perdomo (Aguilas) was 0-0, 2.11, 0.80 with 16 strikeouts in 21.1 innings.  Anthony Slama (Mazatlan) was 0-1, 1.76, 0.85 with 19 strikeouts in 15.1 innings.  Todd Van Steensel (Sydney) was 0-0, 3.32, 1.06 with 25 strikeouts in 21.2 innings.

The average:  Casey Fien (Guasave) was 4-2, 4.40, 1.27 with 31 strikeouts in 30.2 innings.  Deinys Suarez (Ponce) was 1-1, 3.56, 1.68 with 19 strikeouts in 30.1 innings.

The bad:  Tim Atherton (Canberra) was 0-1, 9.53, 1.59 with 8 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.  Cesar Ciurcina (Aragua) was 0-0, 5.74, 1.79 with 7 strikeouts in 15.2 innings.  Brett Jacobson (Mesa) was 1-2, 6.94, 1.17 with 12 strikeouts in11.2 innings.  Bruce Pugh (Mesa) was 0-1, 12.21, 2.93 with 13 strikeouts in 14 innings.  Aaron Thompson (Este) was 0-1, 6.10, 1.84 with 3 strikeouts in 10.1 innings.  Dakota Watts (Mesa) was 0-1, 5,65, 1.74 with 9 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Saturday

Escogido 5, Aguilas 2 in Escogido.  Pedro Florimon was 1-for-3 and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for Escogido.  Luis Perdomo worked a scoreless inning for Aguilas, giving up one hit.

Sunday

Aguilas 9, Escogido 2 in Aguilas.  Luis Perdomo pitched a perfect inning for Aguilas, striking out one. Pedro Florimon was 1-for-4 for Escogido.  Francisco Liriano started and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out four in 3.2 innings.  He took the loss for Escogido.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Saturday

Aragua 7, La Guaira 1 in La Guaira.  Pedro Guerra pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout for Aragua.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Saturday

Perth 9, Melbourne 4 in Perth.  Joshua Hendricks was 0-for-4 for Melbourne.  Sam Gibbons worked a scoreless inning for Melbourne, walking one.

Sunday

Sydney 10, Adelaide 4 in Adelaide (Game 1).  Jacob Younis was 0-for-5 for Sydney.

Sydney 1, Adelaide 0 in Adelaide (Game 2).  Jacob Younis was 1-for-3 for Sydney.

Perth 3, Melbourne 1 in Perth.  Joshua Hendricks was 2-for-4 for Melbourne.

PLAYOFF UPDATES

Dominican League—Aguilas and Escogido are tied at four games apiece in the best-of-nine championship series.  Game nine is scheduled for tonight.

Mexican League—Obregon won the championship.

Puerto Rican League—Mayaguez won the championship.

Venezuelan League—Our congratulations go to the Tigres de Aragua, who defeated La Guaira four games to two to win the championship.

Australian League—Perth defeated Melbourne three games to one in the first round.  Sydney defeated Adelaide three games to one in the first round.  Sydney now plays Melbourne in the best-of-five semi-finals, which will begin Wednesday.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Aguilas 2, Escogido 1 in Aguilas.  Pedro Florimon was 0-for-2 with a walk for Escogido.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Adelaide 8, Sydney 3 in Adelaide.  Jacob Younis was o-for-1 with two walks and a run for Sydney.  Todd Van Steensel surrendered three runs on three hits and a walk in three innings while striking out three for Sydney.

Perth 9, Melbourne 5 in Perth.  Luke Hughes was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two runs, and an RBI for Perth.  Joshua Hendricks was 2-for-3 as a reserve for Melbourne.  Markus Solbach allowed three runs on six hits while striking out four in four innings for Melbourne.

PLAYOFF UPDATES

Dominican League—Aguilas and Escogido are tied at three games apiece in the best-of-nine championship series.

Mexican League—Obregon has won the league championship.

Puerto Rican League—Mayaguez has won the league championship.

Venezuelan League—Aragua and La Guaira are tied at two games apiece in the best-of-seven championship series.

Australian League—Melbourne and Perth are tied one game apiece.  Adelaide and Sydney are tied one game apiece.  Each playoff series is best-of-five.
