Baaba Maal – Ca et La

Following up on yesterday, I did also listen to West African music while in Senegal. I also took a dance class with live drumming, which was fantastic.

Youssou N'Dour and Baaba Maal were the Senegalese musicians I probably heard the most while I was there, so here's something from Maal. This one starts off pretty quiet, but give it until about the 2:30 mark when it picks up.

Bombino –

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmHTmgr_mNs
A big shout out to NBB for his guest week. Thanks for shaking things up. Here's another cut from the world music scene. I had the opportunity to see this young man play in Lafayette this weekend. To say that his guitar is hypnotic may be the understatement of the year.

Bombino – Azamane Tiliade

As I mentioned in passing last Friday, I bought all of three albums released in 2013 last year. The other two have been featured already in the Best of 2013 roundup. Fortunately for all of us, the third is no less awesome.

Julia Holter – Four Gardens

With her stellar combo (cello, violin, horn and drums) in London, 2013. My favorite new artist. She's definitely not easy listening, but if you have an adventurous ear-you just might fall for her experimental mix of dream pop, classical and free jazz. I sure did. Call it space age chamber music.
