Sturgill Simpson – Call to Arms

Okay, okay, yeah, this is an obvious pick.  Truthfully, this is probably about my 5th choice.  Played one, some have been taken, or nothing live exists (looking at you, Ocean & Cave).

It's a favorite of many here anyway, so figured I'd give it a spin. Here's a nice manic cut to lanch you into 2017. Good luck, you guys.

Chris and Morgane Stapleton – You Are My Sunshine

This song has been around for 80 or so years, performed by everyone from Lawrence Welk, Bing Crosby and Gene Autry to Johnny Cash, Brian Wilson and Low. This version took my breath away. Producer Dave Cobb (known for his work with WGOM favorites Sturgill Simpson & Jason Isbell as well as Shooter Jennings and Stapleton) put together a compilation album this year called Southern Family which is where this tune can be found.

I heard an even cleaner performance of this on Fallon last month, but I could not find it online.

YOUNG THUG – HARAMBE

Young Thug's Jeffery was my favorite album of 2016, and Harambe was my favorite song. To me it's a perfect embodiment of the year that was... a bipolar drumbeat of aggression that's also a gasping, heartfelt paean to love, all in honor of one of the year's most prominent memes... it's perfect.

Japanese Breakfast – “The Woman That Loves You”

As the year goes on, I keep finding myself coming back to Psychopomp. It's an album that is over way too fast, but it's impactful over that short running time. I'm glad I got to see them this summer. They were killer live. I have another song below the cut because the video is awesome.

Sufjan Stevens – Christmas Unicorn

Christmas is kinda weird. But that's okay.

However, at this point, I feel like I'm the Christmas Unicorn.

But that's okay. You're the Christmas Unicorn too.

It's alright, I love you.

William Tyler – Highway Anxiety

This is not William Tyler's WGOM debut; last year Bootsy spun "Geography of Nowhere," a cut from Tyler's 2013 album Impossible Truth. He released his follow-up album, Modern Country, this June. Tyler wrote it in Oxford, Mississippi, and recorded it in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

For me the album evokes a contemporary perspective on Gram Parsons' Cosmic American Music, a genre that blurs country, folk, rock, soul, and bluegrass. Jazz is very much Tyler's addition to this mix – you can hear guitar greats Chet Atkins, Les Paul, and Bill Frisell in this track as much as Parsons' take on country-rock. Listen hard enough and you'll hear some Link Wray & Dick Dale, too.

Angel Olsen – Intern

Pitchfork just named Solange's A Seat at the Table, my favorite album of the year, as the best album of the year. So I'd play her, but I just did that like two weeks ago. Here's Angel Olsen singing the lovely, haunting "Intern." It's more than twice the length of the album version, which is cool.

Julien Baker – Funeral Pyre

Surprised we could only manage one week of "Best Of" posts from the citizenry this year. Even Phil got one up there, you guys ( 😉 ). Looks like DK and I will have to take it from here. I might be stealing one from him right now, actually...

Finally got to getting her debut. It's fantastic. At least in that "I feel a compulsion to listen to something pretty depressing" way.

I didn't really mention it, but the layout of this year's Summer Mix was supposed to resemble a summer day (as in a full 24 hour period, from daytime to late night). Specifically was channeling the summer days of a more youthful time, which were.... well, yeah. Anyway, JB's track from this year's mix really caught my attention. I placed towards the end as it helped symbolize the empty feeling at the end of some of those nights.

I was going to play this version specifically, but then I saw that Pepper had gotten to it. Went to find another song, and each one I found was better than the one before it (perhaps a Millions of Cats kind of thing). Anyway, I decided on this one, which isn't on her new album, but I'm guessing it will be on her next one though.

First time I've actually seen her. She can play. Might be lowkey in love.
