My first exposure to this one wasn't Patti Smith, or even The Boss ... It was the 10,000 Maniacs rendition played constantly on "alt radio" in the mid-90's. I think I like this version best.

The 10,000 Maniacs rendition was so overplayed that even now I find it hard to listen to someone else's version of the song without getting a little twitchy.
10,000 Maniacs covered this song?
I'm so old, I only know Patti Smith's cover, which I think of as the canonical version, kinda like Manfred Mann's version of Blinded By the Light or Jimi's version of All Along the Watchtower.
you might think it's canonical, but 10K Maniacs' most certainly would be the canon
sorry, Bruce can write 'em, but sing 'em? well...
"most certainly"???
Aren't you older than me?
Most certainly. Never heard Ms. Smith's version before.
this may say more about you than it does about me.

just watched the Merchant version, which I don't remember ever having heard. She certainly has a pretty voice. But for my money, Smith's version is much more powerful. And still canonical. But that latter is just, like, my opinion.
