There were essentially three versions of Roxy Music. The Eno Years '71-'73, which encompassed the first two records Roxy Music and For Your Pleasure--and featured an experimental, avant garde, glam rock group. The second version was the Sophisticated Rocker period '74-'75 during which the band blossomed musically and they released the incredible 3 album run of Stranded, Country Life and Siren, after which the group broke up to pursue solo ventures. In 1979, the band reformed and lastly (also sadly least) became the dance-pop Roxy Music/what would become solo BRIAN FERRY that would be the most successful version of the band. In their defense, this period did produce the lushly beautiful Avalon, and Manifesto has it's moments. Still, the era pales in comparison to the first 5 albums, IMHO.
From Avalon (and obviously lip-synched) 1982
We'll end on their swell cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy", a song Bryan Ferry makes his own.

Avalon -- #1 makeout album of 1982.
I have the coffee table book Album Cover Album, and Roxy's covers by Hipgnosis are scattered throughout.
Was wondering which album I should listen to first. Decided on the first. So far, so good.
Chronologically, for sure. And for what it’s worth, I would put their first 5 records right up there with anybody’s.
bootsy - this was a fun week. I was tragically unaware of scope of the Roxy Music universe and I appreciate the exposure.
Thanks, Corny. I’m always amazed at how many folks are completely unaware of so much of their catalog. And then I remember that they never made the charts or got any sort of airplay (other than an occasional spinning of “Love is the Drug”) until Avalon—their 8th album—came out. I might have been oblivious myself were it not for my friend Andrew who turned me on to the group’s seminal releases twenty years ago.
It also doesn't help that most of the people on here were infants when it was first released.
Or eventually.
I didn't want to admit that you all were that young!
As with most, I knew, and kinda ignored Roxy Music due to Avalon. Then about 15 years ago I heard the song Virginia Plain and was blown away. I definitely was into those first two albums. I'll have to check out the next three.
