Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band – It’s Hard To Be A Saint in the City

I was the king of the alley, mama
I could talk some trash

Live at Hammersmith Odeon, London, 1975.

There were reasons behind the hype that landed Bruce on the covers of Time and Newsweek simultaneously in 1975. You had a hungry and charismatic singer-songwriter fronting a shit-hot band wowing fans with sweaty 2 and half hour shows. (If you have a spare two hours, the entire London show can be viewed here.) The other main reason was the release of Born to Run, truly one of the landmark albums of the past 50 years. Fans will want to check out Wings for Wheels: The Making of Born to Run, a fascinating look at the arduous process that birthed that classic. All the major players are featured, with a bunch of rare footage. Well worth your while.

  1. I just recently picked up my first full Bruce album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle (I would've started at the beginning with Asbury Park, but I can't stand "Blinded By The Light" (yeah, I know, I'll get it next though)). A few bars into the first song, I thought, ahh yeah, this is the stuff. Will definitely be consuming more.

    1. Yeah, "BbtL" is kind of his "Ob Lai Di" (Though his version is much better than Manfred Mann's cover.) Lots of great songs on it--including this one, an often over-looked gem. The Wild, The Innocent ... is awesome. So are the next two, Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town. The River has some amazing songs, but would've made a better single LP. I'm on record as hating the production of Born in the USA, which is a shame because there are some terrific songs hiding under that slicked up 80's gloss. Nebraska is everything it's been cracked up to be. You have some fantastic music awaiting you, my friend.

      1. I'm actually pretty high on The River. It may not be as tight* and wild/fresh as the earlier stuff, but it doesn't have a weak side out of the four.

*tight isn't the right word, I know.

    2. Also, live stuff is where it's at. Especially from '75 and '78. That cannot be beat. It's my main choice when I need a fix.

  2. Man, that was fantastic. I really enjoyed the old days when Springsteen actually did a little shredding of his own and the interplay with Van Zandt.

    also, sooo many hats.
