Wolf Parade – Ghost Pressure

Here's the Canadian group performing a song from their 2010 album Expo 86 on the CBC's Q TV show in November, 2010.

(But wait, there's more!)

If you were to ask me who I thought were the Lennon/McCartney of Canadian indie rock during the mid-to-late Aughts decade, I'd have no trouble naming Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug, the co-frontmen of Wolf Parade, although I probably wouldn't be able to decide which is John and which is Paul. (I hope you'll note the intended precision of that statement if you're feeling the temptation to go all James Taylor on me.) Wolf Parade announced they'd be taking an "indefinite hiatus" in November of last year, which they later talked about in individual interviews like it was basically a breakup. Interestingly, they must have recorded the above song (sung by Boeckner) right before that announcement; there's another Q TV video from that session which includes a five-minute interview, and it's apparent that the members are dancing around the topic of their soon to be discontinued status as a band. The breakup wasn't too surprising, though; it's been pretty clear for a while that Dan was more interested in being in a band with his wife (which I can't really blame him for) and Spencer was more interested in recording eight-minute organ epics (which I might be able to blame him for).

Anyway, to alleviate you having to read all that, here's the Spencer-led songs "You Are a Runner and I Am My Father's Son" followed by "Fancy Claps", both from their first album, recorded at the band's supposed final show ever, in Vancouver on 5/30/11.

  1. Alright, this might make me sound like a bozo but what is MOR? Last I knew, regarding tunes, it meant middle of the road. Then again, I haven't heard much of the term since 1997.

    1. Yeah, I'm using it to mean Middle of the Road, since the kind of indie rock I generally listen to isn't usually the most esoteric stuff that's probably out there.
