Game Log #26: Twins at Royals

I'm pretty sure that this recent stretch is a loyalty test for Twins fans. The team has managed to look absolutely awful since that tiny hopeful stretch last weekend. I choose to handle this game log the same way I've handled all Twins conversation for the past week or so...

I'm going to change the subject.

Beer brewing has been going well. I'm actually brewing up a batch of Wisconsin Spring Porter right this very minute... hang on, let me check my temperature.... looking good.... Time to add in some maple syrup.

I do have one question for all the brewmasters that this place has accumulated. How does one achieve the balance between getting enough hops into the beer, without adding a ton of sediment? When I made my hopnog, it had fantastic hoppy flavor (like, really hoopy tasty flavor), but since I ended up tossing the hops directly into the wort, it ended up with a ton of sediment, which I'd prefer avoid, since the final product was good, and tasty, but also quite heavy and near opaque. Last time, we steeped the hops, rather than toss them directly in, and the finished product had less sediment, but also less hoppy flavor.

Regardless, beer brewing is becoming a very enjoyable hobby, and the compliments the finished product has received ar sort of addicting (most of my friends have never had homebrew before, so their reviews end up anywhere from "damn tasty brew" to "best beer I've ever tasted".) So I'm pretty happy with what's been going on thus far. It's a great hobby to get into.

Oh wait... this is a baseball-related site? Oh.

Duensing vs. O'Sullivan - I'm tired of impassioned entreaties, I'm tired of excuses, I'm tired of the reasons that we haven't been winning lately. Just win. Watching baseball is about a hundred times more fun when the cheered for team wins, so get on that. Go Twins!

I agree, although I can accept a loss is the team played hard and didnt make stupid mistakes.

  2. I'm taking advantage of the fact that I'm also in the Royals broadcasting area and watching the KC broadcast tonight. Should make a nice change from dicknbert.

  3. They way things have been going, I can't complain about a 2-run first inning--no matter how it happens.

THE TWINS ARE GOING TO WIN THIS GAME!!!

  4. Seems a bit quiet? Are we all responding to the frustration?

I want to believe in this lead we have right now. 10-16 doesn't sound disastrous. 9-17 just sounds so much worse.

    1. Having the third worst winning percentage in MLB sounds better than being tied for the fewest wins.

    1. I had cheaptoy's Dry Stout earlier. That thing was pitch black. Not usually my thing, but I enjoyed it.

Now I'm partaking of a Red Chair that's likely my last of the year.

  5. the last time Denard had a two walk game was Sept 28 2010 against KC. Sean O'Sullivan was the starter that game and issued 6 walks

  6. O'Sullivan threw about 27 balls against the best part of our lineup and we get nothin' to show for it. Argh.

    1. well... (twitter)

#Giants beat Nats 2-1. Giants first team in live ball era to post 9+ walks, 3+ hit batters and allow less than 2 runs in a game.

      1. It's good to know that somewhere out there, there's a team with an offense even more pathetic than the Twins. I guess.

  7. The Royals broadcasting team are reenacting the Pepsi Max commercial with Snoop.

  8. The Royals announcers are now pondering the meaning of a guy with a "Lasso Us Bert" sign and a fan wearing a horse head.

And now they've made the natural progression to The Godfather.

      1. also bad form on the sacrifice. there's most likely no way he would have gotten the runner out, but if you have that much time, line yourself up to get some momentum towards home.

  9. So I'm sorry I came in late, and even more sorry to see that the Twins have exactly one MLB capable hitter right now. (this is really trying my patience.)

Anyway, Nibbish, to answer your question: I gave up filtering my hops out long ago. I toss them directly into the wort and use irish moss, about a capful, for the last 15 minutes of the boil. I also always transfer a non-stout beer to a secondary fermenter, very carefully, for about a week before bottling. This helps get the beer off of most of the shit with the chance to let a bit more settle out before bottling. Basically, irish moss and careful racking is the key to keeping a clear beer, and I have managed some crystal in my day.

      1. That was me telling Netflix to get the 3rd season of Breaking Bad available already.

    1. + what cheaptoy says.

I like to use a hop sock from time to time depending on how many ounces I'm going to use. I've also come to accept that my homebrew isn't going to be clear enough that I can read a newspaper through it. /budweiser

    2. My surly furious batch has a mess o dry hops added after week two then two weeks of wait - two inch foam has erupted - bottling next weekend.

    1. At this rate, I'm expecting him to retire at the end of the season. I really hope it clicks again for him.

      1. the only good thing that could come out of it...maybe he finally gets his arm strength back next year and we can sign him on the cheap

    1. I don't know what happened, but I'm really, really close to the "wake me when they don't suck anymore" stage.

      1. 80 foot swinging bunt right in between the pitcher, 1b and 2b went for an infield single.

  10. There is seriously no point to this baseball season right now. I'm so very glad the WGOM is not just about baseball.

    1. The only consolation I can think of is that the White Sox are also comically terrible and getting the shit kicked out of them by Baltimore at home.

            1. The local's season quickly heading to the Hairway to Steven.

Dese bums couldn't catch Cream Corn From The Socket Of Davis.

  11. I don't think I've ever seen a batboy pick up a divot after a homerun before.

        1. Nice. I find Casey to be unbelievably hot for some reason. Jane Lynch is amazing as always.

            1. I also love that she was Nick's disco dancing girlfriend from the finale of Freaks 'n Geeks. But my goodness I find her unbelievably attractive.

    1. I'm amazed by the carnage in the eighth and the butcher shop that is our infield. Hey, it has to get better from here, right? Please?

        1. That really didn't help, bS. Now I want to punch a douche with a vest and a puffy mohawk. Thanks for trying, though.

  12. "Beauty and the Beast" tonight. The girl who played Belle was excellent (she's going to UC-Berkeley to study opera next year). And the guy who played Gaston was excellent as well (he's a junior). The girl who played Mrs. Potts was quite good too (going to Belmont University in Nashville to study commercial songwriting). Lumiere (a junior girl) and Cogsworth (senior guy) were cute, and LeFou (junior guy) was a hoot.

the sound was impeccable, no doubt.
