i know some of the nation will appreciate this anecdote:
Marling started writing her own songs in her early teens. The turning point, she says, came when she heard I See a Darkness, the brooding 1999 album by Bonnie "Prince" Billy, the bleak, folk-influenced American singer-songwriter: "It was like a shock to the system." What did she love about it? "Its intensity. It was almost as if I shouldn't have been listening to it, as if I was invading his emotions."
Very nice, joe. Never heard of her before now. I will rectify that.
Okay, I misspoke. Can't rectify never hearing her before today, now can I? (Scary how often I used the edit function at the old site.)
Read a Pitchfork review that referenced Nick Drake, Fairport Convention and Cat Power. Jeez Louise! There's no way she's that good (yet), but those are 3 of my all-time faves. As such, I will definitely cock an ear to her stuff.
yeah, i'm just starting to get into her, but i like what i'm hearing. you're right that she's definitely not there yet, but she's got potential.
This was raw and lovely. I look forward to seeing more from this one.
A little Alanis Morissette, a little Bob Dylan, a little Irish ballad. Very nice.
