June 11, 2011: Totally Checked Out

I have some contractual obligations at work today, so I'll be there for five hours. The problem is, I have no real function there anymore, so I try to look busy while doing nothing, which is much more work than actual work would be. I will not miss this corporation, or corporations in general.

  1. It's funny how things work out. Almost a year ago, I changed my diet and lost 25 pounds. A few months later, I started exercising to get into better shape. I had no particular goal in mind other than to get healthier.

I don't want to make more of that than it is, because there are still lots of people in better shape than I am. However, I can honestly say that I would not have been able to do nearly as much to help with the flood relief efforts over the last couple of weeks had I not done those things.

If don't know that there's a moral to this, but if you need some incentive to get into better shape, maybe this will help. You never know when being in shape will pay off, either for yourself or for those close to you.

    1. The wife and I have been on a diet since March, I've dropped 20, she's dropped 30. Even though I haven't added much physical fitness into that mix, I still feel better in just about every way than I did 6 months ago.

    2. Well, done JeffA. The wife and I have joined a gym. I'm trying to follow your lead.

  2. Okay, so I'm at work now for the first time in over a week. I definitely have no function here anymore. I have no idea how to fill the time.

Meanwhile, the work that I used to do is piling up to hilarious levels, and the new outside company that's supposed to be doing it has no idea how to deal with it.

I can't wait to be done here.

    1. I wish you the best in your new life, Spooky. Hopefully, you can find happiness and success after the move.

      1. Things are definitely looking up for the post-move Milkman.

I did spend most of the last hour talking with our GM, and that was pretty cool. He's a beer enthusiast and he's more interested in getting people where they want to go in life than getting them to be the next great manager. He's one of the few managers I'll actually miss working with.

So, I will be spending the rest of the day sitting on my arse, but I feel a lot better about it now. Plus, I'm getting paid for it, so.

        1. That's good to hear! I've definitely been thinking about you and hoping things would work out for the best.

  3. My 3-, 5-, and 6-year old children are eating their dinner and watching Return of the Jedi for the umpteenth time, and they still cheer when Jabba's sailbarge explodes. Fatherhood has some very simple joys for me.

  4. Spoiler: Awesomeness inside! SelectShow

Thanks to sean for installing the spoiler button. πŸ™‚

      1. Yeah, it is...and it's perfect for what I need it for. I emailed sean about it last night and he emailed me back today saying he had just finished installing it--before he read my email! Good timing for sure. πŸ™‚

    1. It is looking exceedingly good for that sort of thing. 7-1 Phils in the bottom of the 8th. I am pleased to live in a world were the Cubs suck.

            1. I didn't realize that the Billy Goat Tavern was both the source of the "curse" as well as the basis for an SNL skit, so I went in there last time I was in Chicago. I still can't shake the feeling of regret at experience those two histories.

    1. Figures it would break while I was gone for several hours. Now to figure out what's wrong.

  5. Tough loss for USMNT tonight. They had their chances late but dropped a couple of chances. George Dohrmann for S.I. asked a good question after the game:

Worth asking: why does the USMNT start games so poorly under Bradley?

    Ubes, Mags? Pirate? Any thoughts?

  6. I haven't been really following, but it looks like the Canucks could win the Stanley Cup on Monday, despite being outscored by seven goals.

  7. People have been ripping on Delmon Young for his unwillingness to DH. What would the MVP say?

"I did find out something I didn't know until the last road trip. (Cuddyer) hates DH-ing. I used him there in Cleveland and he was asking the coaches, 'What's this?'

"I heard that he was upset, so I asked and he said, 'It's nothing. I hate DH-ing.'"

That was in a column from Reusse on why Gardy thinks Cuddyer should be an All-Star.
