2011 Game 111: Twins at Angels

Alright, who's hanging around for tonight's game? Last night was worth staying up for, but the previous game wasn't. How does tonight's look?

Francisco Liriano 7-8, 106 IP, 7.47 K/9, 4.84 BB/9, 4.67 ERA, 4.35 FIP, 4.35 xFIP, 0.9 WAR
Dan Haren 11-6, 161.2 IP, 7.29 K/9, 1.34 BB/9, 2.89 ERA, 2.68 FIP, 3.23 xFIP, 4.8 WAR

Good Lord, those are Cy-worthy numbers. He's got a career-low HR/FB rate that's helping a lot, but for the most part, he's just an awesome pitcher. Of course, this could be a marquee matchup depending on which F-Bomb shows up. But again, on the other hand, Haren doesn't walk anybody, so you know Gardenhire's going to preach aggressiveness. Aggressiveness to our guys seems to mean "Swing at anything and everything." This could be painful for the offense.

I think most of us have given up on this team doing anything meaningful from here on out, but I'm still hoping they pull off this unlikely win to keep my faint hopes alive for a few more days. Go Twins.

  1. I'm thinking you need to use another word than "meaningful", because I'm always expecting something meaningful. But I'm giving up on any post season aspirations. We don't have any Cuban dictators to jettison this time around.

  2. Geez, the Twins wait until I get out here to go to the west coast? Don't they realize it's like 7:30 in the morning here?

      1. Pretty smooth! I think doing the trip in 3 days made it much easier. Plus, I got to stop in Urbana to see some old friends!

I've got internet and a TV that someone lent me, but the rest of my stuff won't be here until the 12th.

        1. Good deal. You're at The Citadel, right? My cousin lives in Charleston, at least last I heard. I'd stay away though, she's trouble.

                    1. She is family, so of course I love her, but yeah, she's bad news. She's a year younger than me. Mostly she's been an example I can point to and say, "Well Mom, at least I'm not Cass."

  3. Does anybody know how to disable developer tools in Chrome? Mine are giving me some bad behavior. I'm not sure exactly what caused it, it was running fine before I left.

    1. Let's try and make it under two hours. Then I can watch the whole thing and still be in bed by midnight.

  4. I will here for at least a couple of hours tonight. Question, if Joe Mauer hits best at first, therefore he plays first. Why then is elm'n in right when he hit two dingers while dh'ing last night?

  5. I'm stuck at work well after hours trying to fix on some things. Hoping to follow along to a good game and a good game log.

    1. Is one of those things you're trying to fix my problem with Google Chrome? I'm not sure what to do at this point.

          1. What's up with Ben? It's like he's fiercely anti-writing, to the point of just skipping them.

            1. The funny thing is that I see Ben online in various places all week long. When the time comes to submit he's "too busy with his Fringe show," but I was on Turntable with him today for three hours (Bizek was there too, and she nagged him to submit).

    1. I really, really enjoy it. Way more than I should, I'm sure. I thought the show would only be good for one joke, but man, that joke is awesome.

  6. If Bob Kurtz wasnt so awesome at calling Wild hockey games on the radio, I would suggest the Twins pick him up to replace Gordo.

and this inning is starting to suck

    1. Hey...now that I have MLB.tv, I can watch the game with Gordo et al doing the PBP!

      1. oh, Im a big Attebury fan. But if the Twins are looking for that 'older voice' or whatever, Kurtz would be great.

    1. I'm thinking it might be time to switch to the caffeine-free Mountain Dew, young man. You're wound up tighter than a cheap watch.

  7. It is a shame that Liriano still needs to be babysat like that.
    - Bert

WOW. That might be worse that anything Bert has ever said about Baker.

      1. I hope at Twins fantasy camp one year Liriano and Baker use dynamite to give Bert a hot foot.

  8. I am starting to think that Cuddy is making bad throws to first on purpose to make Joe look bad there and then Gardy will move him back to catcher.

Wait, no, nevermind. Cuddy is a shitty second basemen.

  9. Gees Bert, on Tuesday you didn't know that you were teammates with Tim Salmon at one point. Since then all you have done is talk about how awesome Tim Salmon was. You are such a putz.

  10. Well, I'm probably not going to worry about staying up to see the end of this one now and will just find out who won in the morning. Welcome back me.

  11. I was very amused that Trumbo's homerun came on EXACTLY the pitch Bert was requesting. EXACTLY.

  12. Alright kids, I've got a very early wake-up call tomorrow. I'll leave you with this:

  13. Just stopping by to say "can't wait to get a new home computer so I can come out and play.

  14. MLB should just pick four fans to umpire every game. The sheer number of incorrect calls is astounding.

    1. Over at HBT today on the Davidson post, everyone was railing on the umps, but when a guy suggested robot umps everyone flagged his comment as lame. I don't get that at all. Do these fans need their resentment of umps that badly?

      1. They fear the robot uprising. Hating robot umps just moves them closer to the top of The List.

  15. aaaaaand that's the last straw. By bringing in Mijares, Gardy has said "Pete, you should probably go home. It's late and your wife misses you."

    1. As long as Thome gets to 600 this year, the season won't have been a complete waste.

      Yes, I realize I probably just triple-jinxed Thome into a full-body cast

  16. Bert likes the Angels to win the West because he thinks they play better fundamental baseball than the Rangers, and they have better pitchers. He doesn't mention their offenses, which is convenient since the Rangers have outscored the Angels 562-430. That's enough to negate the pitching edge, I should think.

I wonder if the Angels play better "fundamental baseball" than the Rangers. Either way, I think Bert only said so because he wanted to pick the Angels to win.

  17. Oh, and now Bert's on the old "Some of the numbers up there are tainted, but Jim Thome did it the right way." Yeah, yeah...so did everyone else, until we found out they didn't.

  18. 4-6 on the dreaded West Coast trip. I haven't given up, but I'm more optimistic than most. Could've been worse. Goodnight, folks.
