August 20, 2011: Timing

I feel like it's a cruel joke that the Twins are stuck playing the Yankees right when everyone was on the fence about whether to continue investing in the team for the rest of the season.

  1. This is the time to watch the young players and those recovering from injuries, like Morneau.

  2. I'll keep watching just because it's baseball. It's still the greatest game in the world. The winter is long, and there will be quite enough months without baseball as it is. I'm not going to stop watching the games while there are still games to watch.

      1. real quick, for anyone in the know, i'm almost done with the first book. if i watch the series, does it spoil any part of the future books?

        1. It does not, so you should be ok. If it does, then it was nothing major enough for me to place it in the second book.

          1. So far, that's true. The first season corresponds almost entirely with the first book only. (There is one scene in the first season finale that is from the second book, which I will put behind a spoiler here:

            Spoiler SelectShow

but I don't think it would "spoil" anything crucial about the subsequent books to see that scene in the series before reading them.)

The second season, as far as I know, is supposed to correspond pretty closely to the second book also, although the showrunners have made some noise about not feeling constrained from expanding their scope for that season to include things from the following book(s) if they think it works. Personally I think the third book ought to take more than a single season to cover, whether that means filling some of it into the second season or expanding it into a fourth season, if it lasts that long.

            1. excellent. i just finished the first book, but might not get to the second for a little bit, but it will be hard not to watch the first season. i should have at least 2 and 3 wrapped up by the time the next season comes out.

              thanks for the info.

  3. I'm avoiding this series because I don't need Yankee induced agitation. But I'll be around for game logs here and there the rest of the way.

  4. Ol' StatFreak was in fine form last night.

Anyone else feeling dumber by reading these tweets? #tfans #twins

This Twins defense sucks my ass. #Twins #tfans

      1. The best part was that it was his very next tweet. Also, his Twitter bio really is a larf:

Hardcore Minnesota Twins fan, lover of baseball, sports, Joe Mauer. Baseball stat-head. A nerd that no one really knows about.

@twins Noah says last nite as i put him down "can Joe Mauer be my dad some day" I said no, I am your dad. He says "how about Morneau?"

    1. Sweet. At the same time, I am working on a special Brew Day Melee that is either going to be kind of fun or a lame vanity project. Time will tell.

      1. Magoo is shaming me again. Seriously, ct, it will happen. Eventually.

*hangs head, but doesn't get up from couch in mom's basement*

        1. Heh, no worries. I'm neither demanding nor impatient. Whether you send it or not, you'll still get a bottle of barleywine this winter.

          1. Semi-related: Kernel is already a week late...my full-grain brewing education is beginning to look like an early fall rather than late summer event.

            1. That might work out better any way as the bauble could come any week now and will definitely not go beyond September 11th.

              1. will definitely not go beyond September 11th.

Heh, for your sake, I hope you're right. We are really getting antsy here.

                1. Well, the pregnancy hasn't gone perfect, so we're scheduling an induction for the 11th. We're hoping she comes before that, but the hospital won't allow her to go beyond.

                  1. In that case, I hope so too. We're trying like h*ll to avoid the induction, but our clinic has said they don't want to allow her to hang out beyond the 29th. Family & friends (and pretty much everyone else) know we're late. We've received countless unsolicited suggestions about how to get the labor started.* Needless to say, none of them have worked yet.

*These could fill a Father Knows Best post.

                    1. *These could fill a Father Knows Best post.

I want to say I have post for that coming up and the idea of unsolicited advice is something I want to rant about.

                    2. did they mention teh S-e-x? THEN you know they are serious.*

*We were way early both times, so I don't have personal stories to relate.

                    3. The S-E-X has been mentioned to us, but that might be because we took the crusty Bradley class. Hippies are all about that sort of stuff.

                  2. the 11th? On purpose? It is some sort of anniversary, as you may recall. Man, no offense to Rhu (whose birthday it is), but I'd strive for a different date. Give her some spicy food and go for a ride on a rough county road or six.

                    1. Yeah, there's that, but that's the "estimated due date". I do have another friend who was born that day as well, and I'm not the overly sentimental type, so I think we could work with it if need be.

  6. Yesterday's lineup worked so well, the Twins are going to use it again. Thome's back must be flaring up if he isn't in the lineup against a righty again, especially at home.

    1. There's only 10.5 points between second and seventh- I was in seventh on 8/8, then I made it to second place eight days later, before sinking back a couple spots. If anyone besides SoCal wins it, I'd be shocked, but the next 5-6 spots are pretty much anyone's guess.

  7. I had my interview to be an acting teacher here in Phoenix today. It went very well, and the interviewers were talking about an expanded role based on my expertise as well as the surprisingly high demand they were getting for classes.

It's been an awfully strange trip, but I may end up here in Phoenix.

      1. I'm hoping he can be a WWE ref who teaches acting and is based out of Phoenix. But yeah, I'll tune in to Raw every week if Spooky is a ref.

        1. Well, that's for an independent Phoenix promotion, but yeah, that would be fun. Getting a job with the WWE that put me on the road 300 nights a year would sort of defeat the purpose of being with my kids, though.

          1. I mean in a way that would allow them to film you and superimpose you into the ring so you could stay in Phoenix all the time. Its no worse than what they already do with the refs.

            1. Even if he was just superimposed, he'd probably get more calls right than the existing WWE refs who are in the ring.

              Or MLB umps.

    1. Bummer. I wonder what he does next. Independent ball, overseas, or will another organization kick the tires?
