  1. There will be no Venezuelan View today because no Twins played. Scores were Aragua over Margarita, 3-1; Lara defeating Caracas 5-3; and La Guaira beating Magallanes 5-4. In tonight's action, Aragua is at Margarita, La Guaira travels to Caracas, Magallanes goes to Anzoategui, and Zulia is at Lara.

      1. Thanks, doc, but evil always seems to find me.

I'm excited, and a bit crazed at the moment. I'm certain that I'll forget something but that's to be expected.

            1. Ah, the mythical oyster stout. I want to plan a trip there just to have some.

              Good luck over there.

  2. the Wild played a nailbiter last night, killing 17 minutes of penalty time and winning 3-0 (a late empty netter pushed the score up). They have a 5 game win streak and its all thanks to really hot goaltending

    1. I feel like I've seen this story before, only it was called hot "pitching". Although I'm guessing the rest of the Wild roster isn't as craptastic as the Twins roster was.

    2. The first month of the season could not have gone more perfect for the Wild. My worry coming in to the season was that we would be in a deep hole by the time new players adjusted to each other and a new system. davidwatts is correct. Hot goaltending has carried this team. Now, the Heatley/Koivu line is heating up, the newbie defensemen are settling in and looking great and we are fairly healthy.

If we stay healthy, I think this team will only get better. Even if the goalies do cool off, I believe the scoring is going to pick up. Love the top two lines, and the Johnson/Powe line last night looked like it could cause some fits too.

      1. Although Cal was out last night, I think in most recent games, the third line of Gillies-Brodziak-Clutterbuck has played the best all-around.

        1. Yes, that line has been solid. It has been awhile since I have felt comfortable with the talent beyond the first 2 lines and the first 3 or so defensemen in the rotation. In a snapshot of the first 14 games, we do seem to have more depth up front than in years past.

  3. For the Oldsters in the Nation. Can you identify (a) the woman in this picture and (b) the gray haired man?

      1. My wife saw Nadia this summer at a gymnastics meet in St. Paul. She joined twitter so that she could follow Nadia. She sent her a tweet and Nadia responded. This was a big deal for my wife, as Nadia was her childhood hero.

    1. It's too bad he didn't get to go out on his own terms. But such is the consequence of a serious lapse of judgment.

      1. I think this is the right thing to do. But, who saw this coming: Penn State Fires Joe Paterno. And this detail: mid season. And this: in the wake of a huge sex scandal.

        Unbelievable.

    1. Too late for Bobby Bare Jr to change your mind?

I listened to this last night and thought of you.
      Enjoy your travels!

    2. I'm probably too late to see you off properly, but according to my sources, no, today is not Thursday.

Either way, best of luck to ye.

  4. I found out last night that Brandon Nimmo, the son of a couple I knew in high school, was drafted by the Mets this year. I played football with his father and uncle, who were both also stud wrestlers, and his mother was in my sister's class. I even went on a double date with his eventual parents (Sadie Hawkins dance) in which we all drank too much Four Roses whiskey, my date puked on my shoes, and I very nearly drove us all into an irrigation canal.

    1. Bah, its only rough on residential streets. (not that I wouldn't recommend the tubes for later.) Besides, Madison is well known for excellent snow removal......

I learned today that its time to get a new battery for the VW, though, I tell you what.

      1. I'll be picking green beans and jalapenos in my back yard on friday. Maybe the last green beans of the season. Maybe.

The oranges are starting to turn color, thanks to some cold nights lately (40s).

            1. There is a distinct possibility that we could end up almost exactly half way between your current location and Rochester MN. I've got my fingers and toes crossed.

              1. Google Maps tells me that Tomah, WI is the largest municipality to fit that description.
                Unless you were being metaphysical.

                  1. ahh, winona. i know i've said it here before, but i miss that place waaaay more than i thought i would.

                    1. That may have been the point. Lacrosse has an opening for one of us, and it just so happens that we know a few folks in the department- We're not really counting chickens this time around as there are a lot of folks on the market. If it happens we'll be pretty stoked to move back to near the mother land, if not - no biggie.

Oh, and if it happens I'm sure you'll see me around Chi-town.

                    2. best o' luck on that as well.

and if it happens, i'm sure you'll see me around winona (most of the cats i went to school with aren't there anymore, but we still know plenty of townies and try to stop by on our way to the cities when we can).

    2. I already loaded my wife's truck with sand tubes. But I really, really need new tires for the van before it snows here, my current tires are down to the wear indicators. Sounds like a good way to spend Saturday morning now that the leaves are all hauled off.

      1. I'm wondering if we can two more winters out of the tires on our Subaru. We just crossed 60k last month, but the tread looks pretty great. I'm hoping we can make it because the F100 will likely need tires* next year and I just put tires on my Volvo (which we're trying to sell) last winter.

        * and wheels? It seems like 225/75R15 is a much rarer tire size these days. Seems like not so long ago it was the gold standard.

        1. Ugh, I put new tires on the Corolla like a month and a half before trading it in. Hopefully it helped get a better trade in value for the thing.

    1. and the comment section at Hardball talk took just one comment to devolve into an argument over U.S. politics

        1. Ugh. For some reason, your comment made me read their comments section.

Some of the sorriest pieces of human trash I've ever encountered are there. It's horrifying. This is why I swore off comments sections. Damn.

        2. It's painfully obvious that America's poor choice in [redacted recent election] is directly responsible to the moderate crossover success of the muscular "dubstep" of Skrillex et al, to the detriment of the more nuanced dubstep of Burial and Kode9. If voters don't see how public policy affects these issues -- issues they claim to care deeply about -- then this problem is only going to get worse. Educate yourselves on the issues before you vote, and vote for the dubstep of thoughfulness and beauty. Otherwise, Old Navy will use "dubstep" to sell you fleece apparel for Christmas 2012, and your children may be next. Also: jobs!

  5. So long, meat!

(Am I too late? I probably am. Hopefully, he'll appreciate the gesture anyway.)

    1. I do appreciate the gesture. Will on the other hand...

Contrary to all that I've heard Ireland does have the internets. Y'all will see me round these parts at some point soon.

  6. I thought there was nothing on TV tonight (I usually watch 'Happy Endings' on ABC, but they were showing some Pop Country music show) but stumbled upon 'NOVA' on PBS and had this fascinating show about how Einstein's Gravity Unification Theory does not really jive with Quantum Mechanics. Heady stuff, but the show explained it so I could even understand it.

    1. shoot, my NOVA here is a week behind.

Also, the Science channel just started a Six(?)-part series put together by Ridley Scott called Prophets of Science Fiction. Last night's ep: Mary Shelley, next week: Phillip K. Dick

  7. ...Seeing the students at Penn State was the last straw the lead to meat leaving America after believing its college students to be a lost cause....

    Safe travels, buddy.

    1. I thought rallying around Paterno the other day was dumb, then I wake up to news of rioting. Gives new meaning to the term "tin eared dumb f*cks".

      1. I think that College Students will take most any reason to riot. If it hadn't been for JoePa's firing, it would have been for his non-firing. Or losing to Nebraska this weekend. Or beating Nebraska this weekend.

If they had chances at a Hockey championship, they might have waited, but I assume that the current PSU students figured this was going to be their best "reason" to riot.

Note: I haven't seen any coverage of the riots, so this might be as dumb a statement as Ashton Kutcher or Brian Dozier made about JoePa's firing.

        1. No, his picture next to "tin-eared dumb f*ck" in the dictionary is being replaced by a Nittany Lion.
