December 30, 2011: Capitalizing

While talking to Sean, it occurred to me that we're shooting a show about the apocalypse in 2012. That seems like a cash-in, but I swear it's just a coincidence, since it was conceived about four years ago...

  1. "Well, that's cutting it a little bit close, isn't it? I mean, just from a sales point of view, I mean your book is just coming out, you're not gonna see any paperback sales for at least a year. It'll be at least another year before you know whether you've got that mini-series or movie of the week kind of possibilities. I mean, just Devil's Advocate, Milty! I mean shouldn't you have said: 'Hey the world's going to end in 1992!' Or better yet 1994!"

  2. After several years of trying I finally finished reading Catch-22. Joseph Heller is kind of a dick for the way

    Spoiler SelectShow

but it was still an excellent read. The copy I have is stamped with the name of my Highschool Library which tells me that I was probably assigned this book in 11th grade and just now got around to reading it.

      1. Heh, I had the same "holy crap" moment. Although its possible hj took his name from the American criminal and swindler Joseph Lewis.

          1. D*mn it...now I have to finish that sucker before Monday? I'm still only half done with it. Have been since the last time we talked about it here. That time prompted me into agreeing that I'd go back and try to finish it.

      1. I wish Movie day was this Monday. I've seen some (not in theaters, but still...), and I won't be working.
No offense to the bookish intended.

        1. Hey, only 17 days until the next Movie Day!

I'm trying to load up on movies in the meantime, too. The last couple months have been pretty lousy for my movie viewing.

        1. well, there was OK soda, which was marketed from a slightly different slant.

          p.s. i loved that stuff

          1. Really?! I really wanted to love OK Soda since it was trying so hard to be liked by guys like me (I should have seen that corporate subversion for what it was, but hey, I was a teenager). But, man, I couldn't get into it. It tasted like a suicide, and not the Mountain Dew/Dr. Pepper suicides I preferred back when soda didn't make my insides burn.

            1. Consensus at my high School: OK Soda was aptly named. I wouldn't turn it down, but I wouldn't search it out.

IIRC, Surge tasted more like the current Mountain Dew energy drinks than Mountain Dew does. I used to drink Dew by the cases, but now it tastes like soap. I'd truly rather drink crab juice.

              1. Yeah, I think that's the consensus everywhere. OK soda was just okay. To me it kind of tasted like orange, cola, and lemon-line sodas were just mixed together like kids do at the fountain.

I had a Surge addiction for like six months back when the place I worked sold pop and it was the only non-cola that was available. I miss it sometimes.

In related news, I saw a store selling Squirt, which I hadn't seen in a while. That's one I don't miss.

                1. I still drink Squirt sometimes in the summer. It'll never go away because it's required (as "Sour") for several mainstay cocktails.

Usually, though, if I'm drinking soda, it's for a caffiene fix, and then Squirt won't work.

              2. Same here. I couldn't get enough Dew when I was in high school and college, but it seemed like they changed their formula and didn't tell anyone. Maybe my tastes changed, I don't know. I can't handle much caffeine nowadays anyway. My teeth can't handle much citric acid either.

  3. Well, I just found out today I will be starting a new career next week selling life insurance and mortgage insurance. It's a pretty unique company that does it all by phone and I'll be doing it M-F, 10-6. I'm back to commuting at least an hour each way, but it sounds like it won't be too hard to make more than I ever have before, so I'm pretty excited about it. I'll be putting my Rhapsody and XM subscriptions to good use, that's for sure.

  4. Bill Simmons:

The good news? The Vikings figured out their stadium issues, which means I don't have to get any more e-mails like these …

From Andrew in St. Paul: "If the Vikings move to L.A. I'm going to sit in my bathtub and listen to Against All Odds by Phil Collins for a week."

From Matt in Minneapolis: "You a-holes in L.A. can have the Vikings. We don't care enough to pay for a stadium, so you can assume the worst roster in the league with $100 million devoted to a running back. I'll also sell you my 1999 Ford Ranger with 200,000 miles on it for $40,000.

    "Sincerely,
"Guy who would rather stay home and watch games on TV with my whiskey that doesn't include a 10% sales tax for another stadium for a shitty team."

    Wait... what?

      1. dido.

        In today's WaPo:

Ted Mondale, Dayton’s chief stadium negotiator, said the Linden Avenue site “has a lot of possibilities” but added that all four sites being discussed for a new stadium have strengths and weaknesses.

The team and state and local officials were moving closer to selecting a site, he said.

“If we’re not talking about (one) site in mid-January, we’re behind,” Mondale said Thursday.

    1. Bill kinda jumped the gun on that one. Or maybe he's just that in tune with politics in Minnesota.

    2. Maybe he saw the note by SI's Expert on Everything Peter King in this column (it's on page 2 if this doesn't go straight there), something I too haven't seen remotely indicated anywhere else.

      1. You didn't hear it from me but there is some serious steam behind the farmer's market/behind Target field site. Which is a big relief to the University, we really don't want them at TCF for 3 years. However, I am not sure if King/Simmons has the same sources I do.

        1. The farmer's market option is the one I've heard the most people have the least issues with. I'd really rather not watch the Vikes at TCF for the next three years, but if it's that or watch them go to LA, I hope the Gophers can scootch on over and share for a couple years.

    1. Robby has dain bramage.

The 2nd quarter v. Miami the best period of Woof basketball I've seen in many moons. Ah-Ooooo!

      1. I've been listening to it, that was a pretty impressive stretch the Wolves managed. And Wes Johnson has hit 2 three-pointers this game. This is the most interested I've been in the NBA in at least 10 years.

      1. Yup, hammy. They were worried it might be torn, but it sounds like just a bad pull. Still going to take a while to heal up.

      1. I gave up after the 2004 playoffs when it felt clear to me that certain teams were going to get every advantage. Soon after that, ref scandal happened. I remember some NBA fans being surprised, and I figured they had to be fans of the teams that benefited.

      1. I can play this game.

          1. I'm in a slightly different mood

    1. That's small picture.

Big picture. Rubio is making guys like Anthony Randolph look good. Adelman looks like he knows who should be on the floor.

      There is hope.

  5. Stat lines from tonight I like:

STARTERS MIN FGM-A 3PM-A FTM-A OREB DREB REB AST STL BLK TO PF +/- PTS
    Beasley 22 2-6 0-0 0-0 0 3 3 1 1 0 2 4 -1 4
    Randolph 25 6-9 0-1 2-2 1 2 3 0 1 1 2 3 +18 14
    Rubio 31 4-7 2-2 2-3 0 6 6 12 1 0 5 1 +9 12
    Williams 21 4-6 2-3 0-2 2 2 4 0 1 0 2 0 +4 10

(ed: Made everything line up --sean)

  6. awesome game, but losing still sucks. LeBron James gets a the favor from the ref on a ridiculously flimsy call.

  7. Alright, here is my half in the bag Beasley trade offer of the night:

Detroit gives a lottery protected #1 to GSW or Minn (really either team works)

And yes, I am seriously considering make ridiculous Beasley trade offers until it happens. And yes, it has gotten to the point that I would rather have these two players than SCB/Wes.

    1. GS gives up Brandon Rush and acquires Wes, and its projected wins go down by ELEVEN??? I don't think so, John Hollinger. There is no friggin' way that Wes is eleven wins worse than Brandon Rush, or any other second-string shooting guard.
