I grew up with Atari, which is to say it was the system we had until I was seven years old and the NES came out. Then we kind of stopped playing. And there's not really any games I go back and play anymore. I loved Pitfall 2, and Moon Patrol, and Missile Command, and especially Keystone Kapers. But my favorite may have been Yar's Revenge.
It's quite simple really. You control a fly called a Yar. You have to destroy a laser base named Qotile (and get REVENGE). There's shooting and force fields and lasers and missiles and all that. But for 1981, the game play was very fluid and the sound and graphics were pretty sweet. As far as games go that repeat seemingly endlessly with little variation between levels, I enjoy this way more than Q*Bert or Pac-Man.
In addition to what you're playing, what was your favorite Atari game and why?
Playing nothing right now. Gave up video games for lent. I'm anxious to play again next week.
Was playing Dark Souls. Favorite game of this generation... tied with Demon's Souls. I'm thinking of getting SSX this week for $30 at Best Buy.
Favorite Atari game... Adventure. I'm an RPG nut, and I think this is what started it.
So I should buy Dark Souls used for $12?

My PS3 is mostly just a netflix machine these days, but I've had an amazing time with Journey. It's a download-only game that sees you as an anonymous hooded figure traveling through obstacles towards a distant mountain with a similarly anonymous companion, matched up randomly online. You can communicate, but only by emitting a pinging tone. It's a really beautiful game, and a surprisingly deep experience.
Just finished L.A. Noire. It was okay. It had a pretty good story and interesting game mechanics, but I think it might have gone on a little too long. It was probably my mistake to take the time to drive off to the side missions all the time.
The next games in my queue are Mass Effect 3, Arkham City, and Dead Island.
I haven't played Noire, but over the years I've tended to loathe side missions, especially when they actually take longer the main plot. Often times they artificially make the game longer without any added satisfaction. There are many games I've never finished because there's so much playing in the sandbox to do you start forgetting the story.
The side missions themselves were actually pretty fun, but sometimes you would have to drive across the entire map to get to them and that could take up to a half hour there and back.
I'm too old for that
engagement will do that to a man.
i finished that game up recently as well. i enjoyed it. i don't play many games, but i'm a wretched completionist when i do so i'll probably go back and get the 100%.
agreed regarding the side missions (the fun of them, and the long voyages). it took me about half the game the realize that that's when it was time to pull over and let your partner drive.
i'm a wretched completionist
This describes me.
I think I'm about halfway through Mass Effect 3. It's pretty ridiculously awesome so far.
Yeah, I think I'm in a similar place and with a similar opinion of Mass Effect 3. I'm taking a break from Skyrim to play it. I kind of want to try to finish before they push through the new ending so I can complain about all the dumb nerds complaining about the current one.
Oh, and also, River Raid was probably my favorite Atari game.
Same. Also, unless I hate the ending so much that it ruins the entire series (extremely unlikely, given that the first two games are top ten for me, and the third has been those games' equal so far), I'm going to start from the beginning and play through the whole series again. I'll probably take femshep this time, given the acclaim Jeniffer Hale's voice has gotten over the course of the series.
Super Mario Galaxy. The Wii might very well be my last gaming system until my son is old enough to get a job and buy his own. I still need to get Skyward Sword, but after that, I'll probably never buy another game either (especially with the Wii going the way of the Atari), or again, at least until my kids are old enough to play.
I didn't play the Atari at all growing up, so no favorites there.
I believe that I once had a Yar's Revenge 12" Picture Disc that told me the stupid story they made up behind it.
My Grandma S had an Atari for her two teenaged sons. I think my favorite was Combat! (which came with the console), because it could be one-on-one battles, rather than against the computer. To this day, that's my favorite way to play video games, but I first made that connection with Combat! now.
(Was it "Combat!" or just "Combat"?).
Our house's console was a Commodore Vic 20. There were a few rad games, but they had basically stopped making them by the time my folks bought one.
(Like my kids will reminisce about when Mom & Dad got an XBox Gen 1.)
love Combat; in fact, that was my mom's favorite game I believe. Also forgot to mention Berserk!
Combat was my favorite Atari game, all others were distant second place.
I only really played a 2600 once, at a friend's house when I was in junior high. I don't even really remember what we played, other than that I hated Boxing.
I started Kid Icarus Uprising before I left on my trip, and it rules. At the con I was able to play beatmania IIDX Resort Anthem and Pop'nmusic Tune Street machinse, which was a blast. When I get home, I'm going to try out Ridge Racer Unbounded, despite the fact it has almost nothing to do with Ridge Racer it still looks fun.
