Operation Ivy – Knowledge

He uses some coarse language, so I'll just say that it's NSFW.

Yeah, the video quality isn't the greatest, but that's not the point. Operation Ivy's Energy was the soundtrack of my high school years, and Knowledge was the anthem. I spent many, many nights hanging out at Marty's pizza angrily moshing to crappy thrash music. I saw a great many bands at Marty's that would eventually make a national splash such as Green Day, The Offspring, and AFI. Ahh, the good old angry days.

I miss the old days when a weekend was filled with punk rock shows and trips to Erni Novembers. I'd post a link to a Propagandi song, but they swear too much for this family friendly site.

I include the Cash cut because I saw him at the Mankato Civic Center around this stage of his career. I was a bit too punk rock to really appreciate the concert, but I'll say that his show left an impression on me.

  1. Try as I might, I could not get into thrash or really heavy punk. Ended up sticking with more commercial "alternative" - think 93.7 when it was still "The Edge" format. Dropkick does hold a special place in my heart though.

  2. I had a few friends that regularly made it to Marty's. Told me great stories about Green Day and Rancid and Offspring and Sensefield (OK, so they all weren't breakthrough acts.) I was a year younger than them, but I finally got blanket permission to go to the next show there if it wasn't a school night. Then it got closed down and bought out by the Vietnamese Restaurant next door.

    1. During college, I did get to a show of the Quincy Punx at some coffeeshop in St.Cloud. (A friend's boyfriend was in an opening act, so we drove up from Mpls.) That's really all the punk I've seen unless we expand definitions to include Sonic Youth or Fishbone, who have played music on the edge of the genre.

      1. If you count the terrible bands that played at the Warped Tour in 2002 as actually being punk, then I've seen quite a bit of it.

    2. Dillinger Four was scheduled to play at Marty's about a week after they'd closed. Someone rented out the vacant store that is now the Pita Pit and D4 played their set there. It was a great show, iirc, and was before they'd actually recorded anything. I have both fond and not so fond memories of the 'kato punk scene.

  3. Oh man, Operation Ivy (and Rancid) was basically all I listened to during my poser skateboarding phase. The girl I had the hugest crush on was obsessed with Tim Armstrong, so to impress her I became the World's Biggest Fan*.

    *It did not work.

  4. There were many times 1982-85 I would wake up after a night of punk with my ears ringing, my head throbbing from too much cheap beer, and my arms and torso full of bruises. That doesn't include the time my eyebrow was splayed opened by a wayward forearm with a cast. Lots of SST bands, Minor Threat, Descendants, etc.

    1. I had my ankle broken at an Avail show in the mainroom. I stayed for the end of the concert, but by the time we got home my ankle had swollen to the size of a cantaloupe.
