2012 Game 108: Twins at Red Sox

Today, something called Franklin Morales, who walks a decent number of guys but strikes out waaaaay more and otherwise seems fairly legit, plays host to Nick Blackburn, who occasionally walks guys, never, ever strikes them out, and has no legitimacy whatsoever (shine up that beer sampler for me, klawitter!).

Still, sometimes Mauer conquers all, and he's in there today - catching, even - so I'll stick with this team as they hit the two-thirds mark on the season.

    1. even better would be the Red Sox firing their coach late tonight or tomorrow because of a sweep

      1. Maybe two?

I was hoping the Yankees would get desperate for a starter and take him with Liriano in a trade, and he'd win 11 that way.

        Loopholes!

      1. I was also about this close to poking fun at the Sawks for batting Crawford second when he's been so terrible, and now he's reached and stolen. Everyone wants to make me look like a liar.

        1. Crawford has a bane quality 'gainst the Twin. Like Thome (when he wasn't us).

    #MNTwins trade 3B Danny Valencia to #RedSox.

      1. Pineda, without any context here, looks like he had a pretty terrific season.

          1. the scouting report from that site

Scouting Report: Dominican outfielder signed later in the 2010-2011 international signing period at the age of 20. Smaller frame. Elite speed with a plus arm. Raw offensively.

      2. Basically, it's anybody's guess whether Pineda will ever be anything. I remember his name from doing the recaps, so he must have had some good games against the GCL Twins. How much that influenced their thinking, who knows? My thought is that the Twins decided they no longer had much use for Valencia, didn't want to be paying him, and so took whatever they could get.

    1. I guess they were so happy with Punto, they just keep coming back for our crappy third basemen.

        1. Were the BoSox trying to block the Yankees from getting him? The Twins said 'Ok, you can have him for cheap!'

    1. That's the third time he's been picked off. However, he has 12 stolen bases with only one CS. I think that was scouting by the Red Sox. I never see a play on at first base with runners at first and second, so they knew he was susceptible. He's going through what Span went through a couple years ago with a lot of pickoffs. Hopefully, he'll make the adjustment like Span did.

      1. I enjoyed Bert saying that Blackburn "explodes" towards home after the brief pause in his wind up.

  2. The Red Sox have long been one of my favorite announce teams, despite a color guy who doesn't add much. I just came up with one of the reasons why: they know when to shut up for a while and let the game tell the story. The color guy is no more intelligent than even Coomer, but he doesn't cover it up with a constant stream of words.

    1. Joe Orsillo and Jerry Remy are the announcers. I like Orsillo's work on TBS during the MLB playoffs.

  3. well, we'll see how this goes

The #MNTwins announced today that they will recall infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka from Triple-A. He will join the team tomorrow in CLE.

    1. HPR will be happy to hear this. We're going to next Sunday's game. (He, I, CER, and AJR-- her first!)

      1. Probably just trying to see if he's even worth keeping around as a utility guy. Don't want Parmelee rotting on the bench until they can trade Morneau.

  4. One of the US women's volleyball players is named Destinee Hooker. And spooky thought he had it bad...

  5. The most impressive part of that catch? The throw to the infield.

          1. I guess you're right. I think that's unreasonable. It's one thing to time shift things that happen during weekday afternoons, but weekend afternoon premiere events should be carried live.

            1. oh, I agree with you. People will watch big time live sporting events during a Sunday afternoon (see the NFL). But its the way NBC has worked, and its not going to change.

          2. I don't know why you guys are complaining. Watching this prerecorded equestrian is way more important.

            1. at least the women's volleyball team is both easy on the eyes and fun to watch operate.

        1. Since 50 million people are trying to watch the steam I am going to be buffering through the entire race.

          1. I can't even log in.
Not true. Apparently, by having only basic cable through comcast, I don't have access to NBC streaming.

                  1. Well, I used my wife's Comcast e-mail address.
It wanted our "main" comcast e-mail address, which we haven't used for about 10 years.

                    1. yea, that's a pretty ridiculous requirement. Who the hell actually uses email boxes from their ISP (other than my parents)??

            1. I try not to get fired up about stuff like this but come on. This is the signature event of the Olympics. This not being live is a joke.

              1. And it's one with a huge build up that's done in a blink. That was an exciting 10 seconds.

                  1. Spoiler SelectShow
      1. He has a 2.80 FIP this season. Converting him to a reliever was a smart move by Boston. He just hasn't done well against the Twins.

    1. Not to be a pedant, but I created these nonsense stats. That was a SOC for Padilla.
OSOC would pretty much be synonymous with an L.

        1. They all are. Their genesis was that W, L, Sv, H, & ND really didn't capture the spectrum of relief appearances.
That the guy that loses a game 1-9 looks like he did a crappy job. But if it was 0-1 when he left after pitching eight, most of the blame should be assigned to the guy that BOSOs it. And also that guys who pitch two or more innings of garbage time effectively and without harming their team's chances of a comeback should get some counting stat for that.

They're flawed stats, but no more flawed than W, L, H and Sv.

I'm typing with one hand here, or I would have expounded on the stats I can remember.

          1. for inventing (discovering?) the BOSO and the SOC, AMR should get Jerome Holtzman's J.G. Taylor Spink Award.

  6. Just got back form painting my mother-in-law's garage, just in time to see Donut's bomb.

  7. We need to load the bases to bring up Mauer (or at least get three guys to reach base, so one or two of them can score).

  8. Dang. I wanted to at least bring the tying run to the plate and make BoSox nation really sweat.

  9. 3 out of 4 in Beantown, 2 out of 4 in the Bronx earlier this year. This is like the Bizzarro Twins or something.

  10. Last night while watching the Olympics, my friend Sarah texted me to say that she thinks I'm a white Usain Bolt, given our similar facial expressions and cockiness. I'll take it.

I wish I could have his athleticism, too...
