September 1, 2012: Late Nights

Our store's truck (the one full of product that we get to the floor) showed up two hours late last night, and was twice its usual size. Let me sleep in for a while, dudes.

  1. the Oakland A's scored 20 runs on the mighty Red Sox last night.
Oakland is only 4 games behind Texas, and the #1 Wild Card team.

  2. You think your football team's season started poorly? I covered a game last night in which the home team (Sultans) was playing its first game and it started like this:
Opponent (Wildcats) takes opening kickoff and easily drives down the field for quick score: 7-0
Sultans fumble away ball on second play from scrimmage, Wildcats get it at Sultans' 33 and score quickly again: 14-0
Sultans go three and out and the punt is snapped over the punter's head, who lands on the ball at the 1. Wildcats score two plays later and the Sultans are down 21-0 five minutes into their first game.
The Sultans ended up losing 44-13 at home against a team the local newspaper had predicted they would win (barely). The preview story talked about how the Sultans were playing more difficult nonleague opponents to better prepare them for the playoffs.

  3. heeeeeeeeeyyyyy, you guuuuyyyysssss!!!!!

we still need a few more teams for the BSQUAD (check yesterday's CoC; can't quite do links on the phone). if you're playing in another league, we need you. if you've never played before, we need you. we'd love to get 4 more teams. draft is tonight! sign up now!

    1. I keep getting a message that says "You are not allowed to view this page because you are not in this league. (Error #152)". Clearly I'm doing something wrong, and it's probably something absurdly simple, but I don't know what it is.

        1. Done. Or at least, done if I did it right. Do I understand correctly that my team will be drafted for me, since I know there's no way I'll be around when the draft actually is?

          1. Yeah. You can move people out of your draft queue (if they're injured before the draft, or whatever) and reorder your players if you want. Otherwise, it'll go by Yahoo's preseason rankings.

    2. last chance!!! 2 more teams would make this thing awesome. you know you want to. draft at 8:30...

  4. Twins have activated PJ Walters from the 60-day DL and called up Esmerling Vasquez from Rochester.

I count 39 on the 40-man roster (Baker and Pavano are on the 60-day DL and don't count). That leaves one spot for Nishi or Slama.
I'll guess that Slama is added after Rochester's season is over.
Capps or Span could easily be 60-day'd if there's little chance for them to come back soon. Other than that, I don't see much room for the non-roster guys at Rochester or even New Britain to get added. I guess Manship, Waldrop, Oliveros, and Perdomo don't seem that important to me.

      1. Well there's a 60-day and another spot.
Nishi's road to redemption starts through Oliveros's elbow!
(Nothing personal, Lester, hope you come back as good as ever.)

    1. Walters has been pitching, but he's really done nothing to show he's ready to come back. I assume his rehab time was up, so they had to do something with him, but I don't see him being able to contribute right now.

      1. The Twins need someone to take Diamond's suspension start.
Looking at the roster, seems like there's a lot of potential relievers there, but no one really impressive. Maybe the Twins should bring a lot of them to the Twins and go with a "Bullpen Start" or two.

I say this now, basically jinxing both DeVries and Hendrix to two-inning outings today. I'll get my wish, but not by design. Looks like it's a single-gate doubleheader, so the Twins better have some of those AAA guys at the Rochester airport, ready for a direct charter flight to KC if that happens.

        1. Vazquez is scheduled for the start tomorrow. There's talk of Arcia or Hicks being called up once New Britain's season is over. We'll see if the Twins decide to let Dozier come back.

            1. If I ran a team, I'd have all forty guys up once the rosters expanded, or at least once all the minor league seasons were over. I'd tell some of them that they probably weren't going to play, but we want them to observe what goes on in the big leagues. Plus, I'd tell them to stay ready, because you never know when we might need a pinch-runner or there might be a twenty-two inning game or something.

  5. so Maryland beat some college William and Mary 7-6, but Pitt did them one better by getting beat, at home, by Youngstown St. Pitt also paid Youngstown $400,000 to play the game.

  6. This Rob Neyer article he argues the Twins shouldn't have wrapped up Joe for $23M a year. The thrust of his argument is that the Twins have overpaid Old Joe for the brilliance of Young Joe and should have let him walk a la Cardinals/Pujols.

I got to thinking about Joe's total compensation for his career. Now, this idea might be overly simplistic, as it doesn't address the fact payroll isn't available for other player or the team's desire to get a deal. Instead, I'm just assuming the Twins have hit an altruistic streak and decided to pay Old Joe fair value for what Young Joe did while he was severely underpaid.

Here's Joe's value via Fangraphs and Salary via BR.com.

    Season Dollars Salary
    2004 $3.80 $0.30
    2005 $11.70 $0.33
    2006 $23.70 $0.40
    2007 $12.80 $3.75
    2008 $27.30 $6.25
    2009 $35.70 $10.50
    2010 $22.20 $12.50
    2011 $7.00 $23.00
    2012* $21.30 $23.00
    2013 $23.00
    2014 $23.00
    2015 $23.00
    2016 $23.00
    2017 $23.00
    2018 $23.00
    Total $165.50 $218.03
    Difference $52.53
    Seasons Remaining 6
    Break Even Average $8.75

*2012 is prorated over 162 games. It'll probably be slightly less since Joe won't play a full 162 games this year.

So for the Twins to fairly compensate Joe Mauer over the course of his entire career through 2018, he needs to average a value of $8.75M over the next six years. Obviously that's far less than $23M. That performance is roughly 2011 John Buck. Anything better than that is value for the club.

Again, this isn't to pass judgement on the contract itself or Neyer's argument, but just a quick number crunch to satisfy some curiosity. I'm curious to hear what conclusions more analytic minds might conjure from this.

    1. The Twins don't "owe" Joe for the years he paid his dues just like every other player that isn't eligible for free agency or even arbitration, just like Joe doesn't "owe" the Twins just because he was hurt while playing on an expensive contract. The Twins paid Mauer what the market would bear because he was going to be a free agent. Sure, they could put that money to use elsewhere, but that would have been a PR nightmare to allow the hometown Golden Boy to walk just as a new ballpark was being opened. If you can't keep Mauer around, than who can you keep, and then what was the ballpark built for except to line the pockets of the Pohlads?
