September 13, 2012: More Sleep (?)

I saw the blank draft for this in the dashboard around 7:30AM, and with nothing else scheduled I went ahead and published it. I figure Spooky is still sleeping off his inventory shift. Hope he doesn't mind my stepping in. - Mags

  1. This morning is my last shift in the dairy dept. MC is getting here around 4 or 5. Then one last overnight shift and I'm done at the grocery store. Still planning on a Sunday departure for NY.

    1. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere, Mags. Buffalo is like, the gateway to the Hudson Valley or summat.

  2. Don't know if anyone saw this from Dougie today:

    • All signs point to the Twins changing low Class-A affiliations from Beloit, Wis., to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. An official announcement could come on Sept. 20. When checking with one Twins official, he was quick to remark talks can't even begin with Cedar Rapids until Sunday.

    1. Wonder if the still play at the old Veterans Stadium there. That place was quite the hole when we lived there 20 years ago and they were a Reds affiliate. Still, I'd consider driving down some weekend to catch a game if they joined the Twins farm. Now that the statute of limitations has run out.

        1. Nice. At the old one, I actually saw a rathole that had been gnawed through the base of a concrete wall. I kid you not.

    2. My trainer friend has an outside chance of getting moved up to Low-A next year. He said he really wants it to be Cedar Rapids because it's very slightly closer to the Twin Cities.

        1. My old neighborhood in CR, about a quarter mile from National Oats, featured random gunfire from time to time, mostly on Friday and Saturday nights. Since my bedroom faced the street, I didn't bother with a bedframe, I just kept the mattress on the floor to minimize the chances of getting hit by a stray bullet in my sleep. Seriously, that's no joke.

        2. He's also really hoping that he gets picked to work the winter league in Venezuela, which would come with a not-insignificant kidnapping risk. Sounds like Beloit would be right up his alley!

  3. The fitness post will be a bit late today. I turned in early last night and slept in too long this morning.

    1. I'm not a fan of the casual mockery of season two - it might be loads different, but it's anything but a bad show - but man oh man, that is a blast for folks who've seen the whole thing (and have played tons of action RPGs - which I have). Zelda music! "Crack, Heroin, Mana Potion." Love it.

        1. i'll dido the disdain. while perhaps not my favorite, season 2 is still awesome. my guess it was sacrificed for effort needed more than anything else.

        2. Season 2 was incredibly, incredibly great when I rewatched the show. There's so much happening that "we" just didn't understand our first time.

          1. yeah, i'll give you that for sure, now that you mention it. it was a much better watch when you knew what you were supposed to be looking for (the entire series was, for that matter, but, yeah, especially season 2).

    1. The support for HD is nice, but I can't help feel the console is designed for now rather than the future. I wasn't that wowed by the presentation today. A normal controller is a nice feature though.

      1. Isn't that pretty much Nintendo's MO, though? I remember thinking more or less the same thing about the Wii.

        1. Yeah, unfortunately. However, this time the Wii U is first, so it's to be expected. The Wii was released a full year after the Xbox 360 and had maybe a tenth the processing power. Now it might be two or three times slower than what Microsoft and Sony release, in part because they will be releasing much later. Considering how many handheld platforms Nintendo releases, it may not be a big deal if they don't wait as long between consoles.

  4. Just in case some of you missed the greatest baseball analysis in recent weeks:

    1. 1. So Buck Showalter's gonna win AL MOY, right? That'd be his 3rd. Should be his fourth, as he should have won for 2010 as well.
      2. How ticked am I that after picking the O's to win the AL East for like eight straight years, I switch to picking the Jays?

      1. If the Orioles win the division, I think Showalter wins MOY. If not, then Melvin will. Through today's games, the A's are a game up on the O's.

        1. But the MOY statistic is
          X - E(X) + ε × F(ASDL)
          where
X is the number of wins,
          ε is a scalar, and
F(ASDL) is a measure of DL games above 25 for each player on the opening-day roster that had been an All-Star in the past three years.
There's probably some utility function applied to some part of the above statement, dampening the extreme values.

I'm not sure, but I think that favors Showalter even if they end up one or two games out of the playoffs. I guess it's possible that the Athletics could win their division.

          1. But you're missing the variable for (nearly) making the postseason but no one expecting them too. This also works for the Orioles, which is why I think it hinges on who is closest to making it. The A's are less likely to win the division, so I think the O's have the advantage but the A's are right behind.
