October 22, 2012: A Few Comments that Didn’t Make the Banners

I read through all 1900 of Jeff's comments to prepare for this week, and had a five-page (or so) document of my favorites that I offered up for banners. Some other quotes that didn't make it:

Luckily, I had Rick Sutcliffe to explain Pavano's troubles to me. The problem, it seems, is that Pavano missed having Joe Mauer to pitch to. 4/20/11

The Twins are undefeated in games in which Drew Butera has hit a double. 4/24/11

It's pretty amazing that there are this many LTEs in a birthday post without anyone mentioning beer. 4/28/11

If only Blackburn had "pitched to win" instead of pitching to win the ERA title. He could've given up five runs tonight instead of one, but somehow he would've won the game. 5/10/11

It's nice to know that every pitch Jack Morris threw went exactly where he wanted it to go and that when it did, no one ever hit it hard. 5/11/11

You guys make it hard for me to maintain the virtue of humility
Seriously, I really do appreciate all the kind words. I also very much appreciate the WGOM, in both of its incarnations. One of the greatest blessings I have received is the people in my life, and I'm even more blessed that this now includes all of you. 5/11/11

They would honor Harmon more if they'd win a ball game once in a while. 5/17/11

The first few times I heard the name "Luol Deng", I thought for sure his name must be Lou Alldeng. 7/1/11

I mis-heard Bob Kurtz and thought for a second he had said that Barry White was coaching first base for the Twins. 7/4/11

It has been hilarious to listen to ESPN radio this morning and hear a parade of media people complain about how Derek Jeter isn't getting enough love from the public as he goes for 3000 hits. 7/6/11

Jeter got 3000 hits? Why wasn't there any discussion of this before? 7/9/11

Remember early in the season, when Gardy continued to use Joe Nathan as the closer until Nathan himself volunteered to give up the role because he wasn't getting the job done? I think it's time for Capps to follow that example. 7/16/11

    1. Given your wisdom and humor, it never felt at all like a chore.

It was pretty hilarious to progressively read through the entirety of "We'll just have to settle for...", as well.

          1. Sam Deduno's out of mostly nowhere 7 inning, 9 strikeout, 2 hit, no walk game (that he naturally pitched after I'd spent a week detailing the horrors of the game we were about to see).

          2. I enjoyed booing that one bum who's taking our money and leaving us with nothing but pigeon blood all over the apartment.

          3. That one game I got to watch wherein the team wore Mpls Millers Unis.
Oh, and Tyler Robertson's 3-K debut! I'm still bullish on the guy!

          4. Willingham. Diamond. Butera pitching. Perkins & Burton. Mauer being Mauer. Morneau staying healthier than expected. Cole DeVries. Liriano turning his season around. Doubleheader sweeps.

        1. I've been wondering if I should do it again next year. A part of me would like to, but another part of me says I've already beaten that deal far enough into the ground.

          1. I typically go by the rule:
At first, something like that's funny.
Then, upon repetition, it's not funny.
Finally, holding on to it, it's very funny.

But, sometimes, the whole concept is repeated so often that doing it isn't funny.
(All I can think of is Family Guy.) But, I gave up before finding out of holding onto that whole concept crosses over to very funny after æons.

      1. Also, and I never thought I'd say something like this, physics is really, really, really freaking cool.

        1. I've remarked to mrsS on the vibration of the bat in some of those replays while watching the games. Yes indeedy, high-speed cameras are freaking cool. Also, physics.

          1. Last night was the first game I'd watched with replays with the high-speed cameras. I must have hit rewind 2-3 times for each replay. Nice link sean!

        2. Note how Scutaro's bat continues moving forward, but slows down after contacting the ball. Newton would be proud.

        1. Anytime a first base coach gets canned, I assume that the buck was passed until it landed on a guy who couldn't pass it since he's the low man on the coaching totem pole. Meanwhile, Ullger still has friends, and a job. On the upside, he's the low man now.

          1. And he's taken off third, so he won't embarrass himself anymore.
Wait, he hadn't been there for at least a year. Guess that stink is hard to wash off.
We'll all hate Vavra soon enough, it seems.

    1. Senior Softball leagues in South-Central MN rejoice.
TS is a Twin again! Yee-hah! "Catching Coach": I like it.

It was pretty well telegraphed that Bruno and Cuellar would take those roles.
Wonder who will take their places in Rochester.

    2. As ubelmann observed, it's really hard for fans to know whether a coach is any good or not. We can see the results, but we don't know how much of the results have to do with coaching and how much the results have to do with having good or bad players.

      1. Yeah, who knows if any of this will help. I feel like the hitting coach is the murkiest of them all. Hitters will take advice from seemingly anyone, and if there's anyone on the team who worked really well with Vavra, they will likely continue working closely with Vavra despite what the coaching titles might be.

Brunansky is an interesting choice for hitting coach in that he doesn't seem like the prototypical "Twins hitter." Lots of walks, even more strikeouts, and not much for average. 8 career sac bunts.

  1. For those of you who missed it, the Lynx were bested by the Indiana Fever for the WNBA title. Here's a game recap Moss wrote for friends. (Spooky, does this qualify for any of your writing contests?)

Last night, I planted myself on the Davenport to watch the WNBA Finals. You might assume that Adair was involved, but it was more on a Larkins. It was probably not the Wright move. As it turns out, it was about as enjoyable as Catchings a Fever in January.

The Zellous Indiana fans were gathered for the game in their home arena. Some say Indiana is a basketball mecca, but their arena is no Taj M. Hall. (It's only a third her age, after all.)

I hear this series had had its ups and downs, including the coach Wiggins out at one point. Sounds like the Minnesota squad was taking the Brunson of the punishment though, and last night would prove to be Moore of the same. They were Dunn. By the end, there was much Whelan and gnashing of teeth by fans of the locals, while the Indiana fans got an early Christmas.

Why couldn't this Minnesota team win the championship? Were there missing Lynx? Do they need to Reeve vamp the roster? Did the stars spend too much time in Augustus in London playing for the Olympic squad, and got Peters out? Or was the Indiana team simply a Thorn in their side that they could not extract?

These are questions I cannot answer. Suffice it to say, I've had my Phillips of the WNBA for awhile.

      1. ???

these are all five of the leads from the five series (ST:E, ST:DSN, ST:V, ST:TNG, and TOS). Who is missing?

        1. Chris Pine was included in Shatner's documentary about the Star Trek Captains, so that is why I noticed he was not included.

    1. Does Shat have a terrible spray-tan or is he becoming Ferengi? It's hard for me to tell, though his small lobes suggest spray-tan, unless he's shooting for Ferengi and female.

        1. Stewart is English, hence no exposure to the sun when he is outside, which is probably only for runs of Shakespeare in the park.
