I understand why it might seem intimidating, but it really shouldn't be. If a fifty-three-year-old pastor can hang with you guys, it can't be that hard. 1/11/12
It seems to me that "Chargers" could be offensive to people who've maxed out their credit cards. 1/22/12
I can't keep up with you guys who change your names. I was just talking about that with Cassius Clay, and he agreed with me. 1/26/12
I would love it in a presidential debate if one of the candidates referred to another as a snollygoster. 1/27/12
I really liked Sal Butera, recognizing that he obviously doesn't deserve to have his number retired. I'd be in favor of retiring Drew Butera's number, as long as he doesn't get to wear another one. 2/3/12
K-Love is a contemporary Christian radio network with stations all over the country. I've thought for some time Kevin Love should do an endorsement deal with them. Not that I know anything about his religious faith, or if he even has any. It just seemed like kind of a natural deal. 3/7/12
I hope he means it. I'm not disparaging platoon matchups, but my favorite kind of Twins pitchers are "guys who can get people out." 3/14/12
It's just that I don't like being away from my people that much. It's sort of like the old joke: yes, they can get along without me, I just don't want them to know that. 3/15/12
I don't want to comment on what other churches do, because we're all different, and I don't want to be in the position of criticizing someone's faith. I will say that I personally am fairly permissive about what I'll allow at a wedding, as long as it's within reason. One constant source of amusement to me is that in my current appointment, I'm actually the liberal pastor in the area.
I also will say that I make it a practice to not ever comment about political matters from the pulpit. There are a few reasons for this.
One is that, when the pastor does this, it can be implied that those who disagree are not really Christians. I don't believe that at all. I know many people whom I am convinced are faithful believers who completely disagree with me politically.
Two, I know a lot of pastors, of all political persuasions, who are convince that they know what God's politics are. Coincidentally, God's politics always agree with their own. Certainly there is a congruence between my politics and my faith, but I try very hard to let my faith inform my politics and not the other way around.
Three, even if I'm completely convinced I'm right politically, I never want to risk losing a religious convert for the sake of gaining a political convert. The first is much more important than the second to me.
Sorry if I've gone on too much about this. I don't normally go into these subjects here, and I don't intend to make a practice of it. I only did here because it seemed to fit in with the conversation.

I'm still following Luke Hughes on Twitter. No real reason to, but no real reason not to: he's unobtrusive.
Anyways, new Twitter avatar for him that I enjoy:
Use The Force, Luke!
This has been one of the best weeks in wgom history (so far). I can't wait for the encore π
The Tigers seem to be getting criticized for two decisions last night: trying to score Fielder from first on a double and playing the infield back late in the game with the bases loaded and none out. It seems to me that both decisions, while they didn't work out, were certainly defensible. What do other people think?
Sending Fielder was a little daring, but I think defensible. It was a close play and I think Fielder didn't help by trying to slide around Posey or evading him at all.
For the infield, it doesn't really matter much considering you aren't going to win any games if the offense doesn't score. I don't remember the point exactly, but if that was when it was 1-0 then it seems reasonable to try to limit them to a single run and hope the offense can finally score something.
It was 0-0 at the time, but I agree with you. If you're not going to score at least one, you're not going to win anyway.
I'm not sure we've proven that's true for teams other than the Twins and the Yankees, have we? Has anyone looked this up yet with regards to the Tigers?
I feel like moving the infield back is a low percentage move in general, and with the bases loaded, it seems like a hit through a drawn-in infield would hurt more than usual.
looks like Popeyes chicken is moving to the Twins Cities
Congrats, TC area. Man I love Popeye's. You've convinced me to get some this weekend for lunch, since I'll be spending it all in Madison.
i've never had popeye's in however many years out here. then again, i haven't been to church's or KFC in that time either.
I generally only ever get it while traveling, since I prefer to not eat fast food as much as possible because I can make superior food at home. But, I have a spiel all weekend, and there's a location nearby the curling club and now the craving has been set.
I've always wanted to try Popeye's. Hopefully they're open next time I get to the Cities.
we have a Popeyes in my town. I haven't been to it yet (although I do very much like Popeyes).
There already is a Popeyes in Minneapolis. Located at Pleasant and Lake Street.
And people take a cab there from Burnsville.
Sheenie and I go to that Popeye's for takeout every year on Mardi Gras and have a feast with our neighbors.
Heh. I find this LTE pretty funny.
also, I am now one thrown game away from Brackef GLORY!
That is one BIG preacher in the new image. He makes the other people in the picture look tiny and that jeep look like a toy!
That's my perspective, anyway.
Another good one, Bootsy.
yeah, bootsy, that one's pretty sweet.
It ain't me, babe.
I realized that I'll be out of town on election day (although in theory I should be back before the polls close) so I'm going to vote at lunch today. Added benefit is much shorter (ie: no) lines. Wish me luck
yeah, i'm going to give early voting a whirl this weekend hopefully. not that illinois' presidential vote is really up in the air or anything.
speaking of voting, i noticed that not only is county coroner an elected position in these parts, it also involves party affiliation (though it's currently a one horse race). that struck me as odd. i think i'll run as the green party's candidate next go round (you're all getting chopped into mulch).
I'm dropping off our early ballots at the election office at lunch today. So, can the ads stop now?
I've thought about early voting, but I kind of enjoy voting on Election Day itself. I always head to the polls at lunch and grab dinner on my way back to the office. Then I sit in front of my TV and watch the returns roll in for hours and enjoy the inevitable freak outs by the pundits on the TV.
I too prefer to vote on The Day. I want my "I voted" sticker, damnit!
*considers 47%er joak*
*rejects it*
*realizes that he already made it*
My mail ballot arrived with a little "I VOTED" sticker enclosed. I'm saving it to wear on the appointed day.
*currently rocking a "I VOTED" sticker*
My first general election upon reaching majority occurred during my freshman year at college. I voted absentee during fall break, did not receive a sticker and had all sorts of well-wishers tell me that they were surprised I hadn't voted and that I could vote even at the college address and they could vouch for me at the local polling place. Good to hear that they now give you a sticker that you can wear on election day to keep the over-helpful at bay.
Repeat junior year for the midterm election. (One which saw my FiL's former Community College football teammates get elected governor on a third-party ticket. Story goes that Jim told FiL he'd be good at the wrestling and should come down to the club, but FiL never took him up on it and then Jim moved to California [and changed his name].)
Everybody's favorite pussy, singles-hitting catcher was named to the Sportin' News All-Star team. For what it's worth.
Anybody else watch P&R last night?
havent watched it yet cause the Vikings were on the local NBC and its not up on my On Demand or NBC.com. Im getting a little annoyed by that.
Hulu has it and the producer's cut both online, if you're not behind a filter.
Guys, the eagle has landed and it is awesome. I'll try to put together something more articulate later, because "thank you" seems woefully insufficient, but thank you.
aaand that signals that the encore has arrived!
Dude, I say with all sincerity that we are blessed to have you in our Nation. This week has been a labor of love from a lot of different Citizens.
dido all that bS.
and i don't think you quite understand, padre: that's us saying thanks to you. you don't need to thank us for anything.
You've probably figured out by now, Jeff, that the post we made about desired jerseys and numbers was a ploy to see which jersey would be your favorite. We knew, of course, that you'd be more than satisfied with anything, but we wanted to get some insight if we could.
Thanks to everyone who helped put this together.
Even though I have lived in Minnesota all my life, my school never had a hockey program and was too young to understand hockey before the North Stars left. While I watch a lot of Wild games, and can name some other NHL players, its not like I am living and dying with hockey.
I dont know all the ins and outs of the NHL labor dispute, but they have had too many of them. And crap it seems like the owners and players dont really have an urgency to resolve their differences.
spoons makes the headlines.
i've heard all of those before, and i love crap like that.
i'm sure i've said it here before, but while i'm all for space exploration, i think just as much focus should be put into our oceans.
Sorry about the size, but it's easier to read this way. Here's the page (abridged with a couple of better signatures and a fixed typo) that accompanied Jeff's jersey:
half-baked! I see NOTHING!!
Really? It's there for me. Is anyone else missing the image?
Alright. I put it over on the "Thank You" post. It should show up there.
It's showing up now. I liked the half-bakef version that was delivered better π
My scanner isn't working so I used my stupid trackpad to fashion a sig that looked about third-grade level, if that. I suppose it was the "correct" signature, but I love this logo.
I tried imitating my signature with my trackpad, but I just was not satisfied with any of the results. So, I signed a piece of paper, got out the good camera and took a high-res picture. Then I used GIMP to darken the lines and clean it up a little.
I tried to bring out the gimp too, but the gimp was sleepin'.
I don't think I'd actually ever written 'nibbish' before, so that was new. I didn't like how it looked the first few times, so that's actually the third or fourth version. Took a picture with my phone's camera and sent it off.
I definitely hadn't hand-written a misspelling of "Philosopher" before. I kind of liked how it turned out. Only took me 2 tries, and that was just because I accidentally spelled the real word the first time.
I've written a lot of BS in my career.
I've been using that AMR monogram since at least sixth grade if not third.
Ever since I ditched the Albrecht Dürer-styled "AR".
I simply cheated. You would think it would have taken me less time, but that was a different problem.
I found out that my handwriting is better in Paint than on paper.
Heh, me too.
are you prepared to watch EPL games on NBC?
Kind of bummed to see that, personally. Having EPL will probably detract NBC from promoting MLS, which I would prefer they focused on. The level of play in the EPL is great, but I'll likely never see a game in person and the game times are terrible for me.
I'm not into MLS, but for those who are, yeah, this is a bummer.
I think it actually will complement MLS. This is a great deal if they can get more than one game on at a time on their cable channels. Obviously NBCSN would be the primary but if they can get some of their other channels to commit Saturday and Sunday morning time it would be great. EPL on SYFY!
A lot more cable packages have NBC sports than FOX Soccer*, so it'll be more exposure for the sport in general. I would think in general that would help MLS, but if the MLS games aren't aired it'll hurt.
*I think. At least in my experience. I haven't bothered to look for the numbers.
Other than times like the last day of the EPL season last Spring, Fox has been a pretty disappointing broadcaster for football. Fox Soccer Plus is a joke that no one should pay 15 bucks a month for and Fox Soccer canceled their only weekday show originating from the US over two years ago. They also just dumped MLS, which NBC was willing to not only pick up but broadcast several games on their OTA network.
A little interesting with FOX getting the 2018 and 2022 World Cups that NBC was so aggressive.
I wonder if the games would end up on NBC or the NBC sports Channel (former Versus). I am guessing that NBC Sports Channel has the same penetration as Fox Soccer.
I think the chances are slim NBC would air live EPL games, since they have a morning 'news' show and Sunday have 'Meet the Press'. Perhaps on tape delay on a Saturday afternoon.
The 11.30am CT Saturday games could feasibly be aired on NBC, but all other games would interfere with programming like Weekend Today, kids shows, and political shows on Sunday.
Since the only NFL NBC airs is Sunday Night Football, I'd absolutely love it if they ran EPL games to counter CBS and Fox. I would gladly put up with a delay of a few hours if it means I have an alternative to American football.
Today's edition of Science is Cool.
I was hoping more for recipe hints or barbeque sauce recommendations, but this was still neat.
