  1. O's claim Casilla. I'm glad no on bothered to tell the O's that not all Twins middle infielders are the same.

  2. My wife is just finishing up season 4 of Breaking Bad. Man, I had forgotten how great the build-up is to the final moment.

  3. Things I learned last night:

    1. Diana Shved needs to model his game, not just his hair style, after Taurasi.
    2. The Stiemroller looked mighty good, but hold on a minute. The Kings really, really suck. Wait until the season starts to judge him.
    3. Derrek Williams needs to return SCB's game to him and never, ever borrow it again.
    4. JJ is useful
    5. The Kings have three point guards, none of whom seem capable of getting the ball to Cuz in the post. Of course, his fouling out in minus-six minutes may have colored that impression.
    6. The Lakers spent an awful lot of money to suck this bad.

*The Kings suck, but I already knew that.

    1. I, too, am being cautiously optimistic. That said, the Wolves looked to me like a decent to good team beating the living hell out of a bad team. Bud and Roy won't shoot that badly going forward, which, aside from Pek getting a slow start to the season, would have resulted in a laugher halfway through the third if they'd have knocked down those shots.

And yeah, some real nice D work from Stiemer. He looked like the ideal back-up to Pek.

    2. After watching almost half of the game last night I've now watched more basketball than football this year (not counting the end of the 2011-12 seasons).

Regarding the Kings, I didn't realize that NBA teams were allowed to use split-squads

  4. I got some good news yesterday at work. There is an open position that they had wanted to fill with an outside engineer with experience, but since I've started, they've decided they'll scale the position back a bit in order to move me into it because they consider me "high potential". Its more or less a lateral move from where I'm at right now, but should have a much faster growth potential. I've only ever worked at one other place where they actually went out of their way to tell me that they see a lot in me and give actual compliments, so that was pretty cool.

      1. I should think so. The only question is what I should make. I got some time because it won't be until Fevruary.

    1. Found this New Yorker podcast to be intriguing - Rushdie reading Barthelme's Concerning the Bodyguard.

Great short story where every sentence (except 2-3) is in the form of a question.

So a week or so back I'd ordered a book of 40 short stories by Barthelme and have been reading them today (since I can't walk very well).

His writing style is all over the place - Kafkaesque at times. I can tell after two or three paragraphs, however, whether I'm going to like (and finish) reading the story.

  5. P. J. Walters is being inducted into the University of South Alabama Hall of Fame today, along with Juan Pierre.

  6. Gophers in a scoreless tie with Michigan after one quarter. Wolverines with 9 yards of offense.

      1. Only listening, but that's what it sounded like. That gave Michigan at least four points.

  7. so it turns out Dan Haren wasnt traded to the Cubs, but instead granted free agency. so the Twins still have a chance.

      1. The H-Star cap is wonderful. HPR will be getting one as soon as I get around to it.
CER has a pink Cubs cap.
AJR... Maybe Braves? Angels are out as long as they employ Scioscia and A's says "A's" instead of just "A"
        LBR... Louisville?

  8. Btw, Kyle Gibson is one of the starting pitchers in the Rising Stars game tonight on MLB Network.

  9. It's just a week until the Richmond Marathon, which will be my first! Tomorrow was supposed to be the NY Marathon, but that got cancelled because of the hurricane. I had a friend who was planning to run it, so that's a big bummer for him.

    1. Why did Pitt not rung the third down play into the middle of the field during the second OT? Makes no sense. On the bright side, unlike in the ND and Fulham games, I was actually cheering for Nebraska's last-minute comeback.

      1. the Big Ten refs had a hard time with the 'defensive pass interference' call today. Sparty was robbed. (I was a neutral observer that game)

        1. Sparty was robbed on the last drive, but Sparty was gifted a TD in the 3rd quarter on the "late hit" on third down. The Big Tweleven refs were pretty much inept in all directions and it sort of washed out.

  10. A request: Could we get a Timberwolves schedule on the side of the front page, like we had with the Twins this season? I'm not a big NBA fan, but I might watch (or, more likely, listen to) a game if I knew one was going to be on. Thanks.
