December 11, 2012: Dead Hours

Today we start opening at 8am, despite the fact that year after year, we don't get any business until about 10:30 no matter the season. We're a little bullheaded that way.

  1. Well, at least your company has been reeling in profits hand over fist these last couple of years. I'm sure they know what they're doing.

    1. Maybe they should wait until 11 to open their doors. Let the demand build, and jack up the prices!

    2. They've been waaaaaaay slow to adapt. The company's got a lot of very good ideas right now - finally - but we'll see if it's too little, too late.

  2. Heh, I liked this quote from Derek Williams I just read on the Strib this morning:

"I don't think we necessarily need to talk like that," Williams said. "Myself and Pek are a big part of the team. We need Pek on this team. We need myself, too. As long as we keep winning, all the trade talk will stop."

I like that pretty much all of that is the opposite of reality. (Except for the part about Pek being a big part of the team, that is true.) I'm assuming he's just trying to convince himself that he's good, but it'd be funny if he was really this out of touch with the actual reality of the situation.

  3. Twins announce 2013 minor league managers and coaches.

Not much you haven't heard. Marty Mason and Tim Doherty will be pitching coach and batting coach, respectively, at Rochester. Ivan Arteaga was promoted to pitching coach at Ft. Myers. Jake Mauer moves to Cedar Rapids as manager. Henry Bonilla replaces the retiring Jim Shellenback as pitching coach at Elizabethton. Riccardo Ingram returns to the organization as a coach for the GCL Twins.

    1. Wait, when did Cedar Rapids become a Twins farm club? I might have to make a road trip down there for some games this summer.

  4. My thoughts on the Correia signing (in case you were wondering). Bleh. But, 2013 and probably 2014 aren't going to be banner winning years, so the two trades they pulled off were much more important. If this guy can go out there and soak up some innings, then okay. I think the Twins understand that it's going to take a couple of years to right the ship, so it doesn't really matter if some back of the rotation guy goes out there every fifth day while our new prospects are honing their craft down on the farm.

    1. I'd much rather that wear & tear go on Kevin Correia's arm, so that part I'm fine with. I think there will be guys on the trash heap who can give what Correa will in January still, most of whom will sign for less money on one year deals. This just seems like foolish money to spend. The second year is what really gets me, though. Yuck.

      1. Agree with both the Boss and Zack. Why couldn't they have an option on that 2nd year so that if Correia showed something in 2013 or we aren't quite sure who we got in 2014 he's still an option. But if the dude is the 2nd coming of Nick Blackburn we can show him the door with a little financial hit.

  5. Attention* DPWY & Padre:
"Twins Add Eight to the Major League Roster"...including this guy:

Thielbar pitched at three different levels for the Twins last season, including Ft. Myers and New Britain before finishing the season with Triple-A Rochester. Over a combined 48 appearances, Thielbar posted a 2.43 ERA (77.2 IP, 21 ER) with 74 strikeouts and just 21 walks. The Randolph, Minnesota native attended South Dakota State University and was signed by the Twins as a minor league free agent in 2011.

*This is about 3 weeks old, but I didn't notice until now.

  6. Update on my dad. He went back to work the day after being released last week. He's been able to lay off the cigarettes and keep his sodium intake low (in fact, he said it's way easier than he thought, despite having to give up his favorite local restaurant). He's having another surgery in two weeks though even with that he'll be lucky if his heart works at greater than 35%.

The biggest thing of note is how sentimental he's been the last two weeks. He's even pleading with me and my brother to improve our lifestyle. This from the guy who told us for 60 years "Eat right, exercise, die anyway."

    1. despite having to give up his favorite local restaurant

Did he also participate in Ryan's all-Chipotle diet?

Glad to hear he's planning on living for awhile.

  7. Britt Robson on the Wolves:

Only two teams, the Lakers and Thunder, generate more free throws than the 27.1 per game amassed by the Wolves (and the Lakers’ total is highly inflated by their opponents’ desire to send terrible free-throw shooter Dwight Howard to the line). And no team in the NBA limits teams to less than 20 free throws per game other than Minnesota at 19.78. The Wolves’ ability to avoid fouling is a significant reason why the team now ranks second only to Memphis in defensive efficiency (fewest points allowed per opponents’ possession).

Getting to the line and preventing the other team from doing so is a key to winning basketball games. This is very good news for Wolves fans.

  8. Parenting fial or kids being kids? Some of these are pretty amusing...but for others, I'm glad they're .gif instead of videos where I'd actually have see the outcome.

      1. The gif or the video? Or both? I find the gif hilarious, but the video extremely grating. But the Crazy Frog is about as awful as things get for me: a novelty techno song with annoying vocals.

        1. No, yeah, definitely referring to the gif. I had forgotten the video was even out there because the gif makes it irrelevant.

        1. Possibly. I was extremely lucid for a lot of years before I was essentially that kid, caring about nothing but amusing my friends. Slap on much larger glasses - hey, you remember the '80s - and that's me, more or less.

  9. I have two siblings with CF, so this is making the facebook rounds today:

So there is a little 9 year old boy with CF wants to break the record for receiving the most Christmas cards (which is 35,000). Let's hope out this little guy!

here is his story and address: "In Salyersville, Kentucky there is currently a brave little 9-year-old boy named Dalton who has been living with Cystic Fibrosis and has recently become increasingly sick. He recently was allowed to come home, medical supplies in tote to be closer to his loved ones. Dalton’s last wish is to break the world record for receiving the most Christmas cards (which is 35,000). Anyone who would like to participate to send Dalton a Christmas card be sure to include your city and state so he can see how far the support has come from. The earlier the cards the better! THANK YOU all in advance! Dalton will love receiving these cards"

Sends cards to: Dalton Dingus HC 62 Box 1249 Salyersville, KY 41465

I Snoped it, and it's true, so the kid will be getting one of my cards (I mean, one of my stories!).

  11. Um, guys?

"You walk into the locker room every year, and it's completely turned over," Love says. "There's new guys everywhere. And then it happens again and again. You start to wonder: Is there really a plan here? Is there really any kind of a … plan?"

    1. There is a lot of 20/20 hindsight in this article, but... um... yikes.

In the end, Love never wants to feel like he's pitted against young point guard Ricky Rubio, because he adores him as a teammate and a talent. Yet, the reality is unmistakable: For all of Kahn's missed picks, failed signings and flawed trades, Rubio is the player whom the GM can take full credit. Someday, Kahn wants Rubio to be his five-year, max-out star, but will Rubio want to stay in Minnesota should Love walk out the door?

"It was a projection over a sure thing," Love says. "There's no question there was an agenda here. A different agenda."

"I have a very, very good memory, and I always remember the people who have done right by me, and the people who have done wrong by me," he says. "It will be embedded in my brain, and something I won't forget about. There's no telling what will happen. I would love to compete for a championship in Minnesota, but …"

      1. Ahh yes, nothing like cultivating a dysfunctional relationship with your best player. Seems to be a lot of that with MN sports teams.

    2. I get that Love is pissed - he keeps talking about it - but the roster turnover thing is weird. I mean they have better players this year. And last year had better players than the year before.

But the talk about not forgetting who has done right by him? Not encouraging. At all. Blargh.

      1. Remember that this is the same guy who likes to complain to the refs, which seems to help him get calls. I guess the payoff to this "complaining" would be Kahn getting fired?

        1. Heh, that looks like what someone else thinks, too-

If the Wolves get rid of David Kahn and treat Kevin Love like the star he wants to be, then a lot of this nonsense goes away.

      2. I assume he means Adelman has done right by him as opposed to Khan who's been a bit of an ass to him? I don't know. I get his gripes for sure. I'm surprised this is being done so out in the open too.

    3. you know, last year Love was complaining about the front office was putting a bunch of stiffs out on the court. now he is miffed about a whole bunch of roster changes.

      weird.

      1. What dat? That's the sound of the post season slipping away.

While getting my hair cut I actually heard a dude say that Drew needs to give the money back. Hilarious.

  12. I have to do a double take. My tv listings shows that the Gophers-NDSU basketball game is live on BTN tonight.

  13. Is it just me, or does the D-Backs' end of this Choo three-way seem slightly Daytonian? Only slightly, since I get that Gregorius is young and a shortstop, but he sure doesn't seem like much of a hitter.

    1. I don't think you're the only one. It's a puzzling trade. Plus trading away Young, it's been a puzzling offseason for the D-Backs. Good luck spoons.

      1. I realize it's not a straight one for one, but basically the Indigenous Persons got Trevor Bauer for Choo, Donald, and Sipp? Sigh. Not particularly looking forward to having to face that guy several times a year. You know, assuming he lives up to his potential, blah blah blah.

    2. Im going to miss the Tribe bringing in Sipp to stop the Twins lefties, only to have the pitches smacked around the outfield.
